CDH, the Cloudera Hadoop distribution, includes several related open source projects, such as Impala and Search. It also provides security and integration with several hardware and software products. The Impala framework in Cloudera distribution including Apache Hadoop allows users to execute interactive SQL queries directly against data stored in Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), Apache HBase or the Amazon Simple Storage Service. Impala uses several technologies and components from Hive, including SQL syntax (Hive SQL), Open Data Base Connectivity driver and Impala’s Query UI (Hue is also used by Hive). As part of CDH, Cloudera Search incorporates Apache Solr, a data indexing and search platform based on Lucene.

State and local governments are finding different ways to leverage their open data. The District of Columbia is opening up its databases with an eye to having the information commercialized by companies who can use it to fuel a business plan, the District’s CTO Archana Vemulapalli said at the VMware’s Public Sector Innovation Summit on April 26. “We want to set up government as an enabler,” she said. The District’s  agencies, she said, are looking to her office to find the best ways to make their “treasure trove” of data  more widely available. Some open data programs focus on the needs of residents.

Montreal police will start publishing detailed crime data for citizens and researchers to use as they please. The crime data, which will be released via Montreal’s open data portal, is part of an initiative to be more transparent. The police released its first dataset on Wednesday, publishing details of the 10,860 breaking-and-entering offences in 2015 and the first three months of 2016. This summer, it will release data on car thefts, armed robberies, traffic accidents and fatal offences, the police said. The data will only cover the territory of the City of Montreal. Demerged municipalities on the island, including Westmount and the West Island suburbs, are not included.

In Venezuela, a country where restrictions on the press are rampant and access to public information is not guaranteed by law, being informed about government decisions can be problematic. That is why the Press and Society Institute (IPYS for its acronym in Spanish) Venezuela, with Transparencia Venezuela, is launching Vendata, an online platform used to easily display information contained in the “Gacetas Oficiales,” official government bulletins. A large amount of raw data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been intentionally uploaded online by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for public use. The data uploaded totaled to 300 terabytes (TB), which came after another one made in 2014. Researchers may legally access the information for free through the CERN Open Data Portal. The data includes over 100 TB of information gathered from proton collision at 7TeV. More data was gathered by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector in 2011 using the LHC. LHC is “the world’s largest and most robust particle accelerator” that was created in 2008. It first went live on action in September 2010 with the primary goal of further understanding the mysteries of dark matter.
