European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) is one of the grandest and most expensive scientific endeavours in human history, and most of what is done at CERN is either too advanced or too expensive for everyone else to use. Keeping that in mind, CERN has decided to release 300 TB (terabyte) of data from its Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for free use on the Internet, according to an article tweeted by theoretical physicist Sean M Carroll. A third of this information is “data from proton collisions at 7 TeV (Transient Earth Voltage), making up half the data collected at the LHC by the CMS detector in 2011”, a CERN statement said.

The New York Times is one of the most venerable and well-known newspapers in the world. Despite its long history, the Times faces significant disruptive pressure from the competitive media environment. Proliferating sources of content, changing expectations of information consumers, and shifting sources of revenue have forced the New York Times to reconsider how it creates and distributes content. Open APIs are an important part of that new distribution strategy. Using APIs, the Times is increasing the value of its content by making it available to developers to build applications that can drive broader distribution. Samsung hopes to have its Artik chips found in actual cool and smart products. For instance, a robot that has emotions, a home security system that can tell the difference between animals and people, or a light switch that humans can talk to and respond to their questions. Those applications seem cool that one could just wish the smart devices would be available soon. Samsung referenced the products that can be possibly created with its Artik chips. It is hoping its partners use the processors to create the gadgets then sell them. Aside from being the world’s largest smartphone maker, Samsung has other products such as business design and chips. Artik chips are designed to power smart devices in Internet of Things.

Enterprises and developers may be pleased to know Samsung took an even deeper dive into the Internet of Things with the release of its ARTIK Cloud platform this week. The Korea-based company first unveiled its ARTIK platform line last year. The idea is to give developers the tools they needed to connect devices and create IoT applications. With the new addition of the cloud component, Samsung hopes to make an “open data exchange” for businesses to gather data from their IoT devices, glean insights and implement that knowledge into business strategies. The ARTIK Cloud site lists products it’s compatible with, including Fitbit, Samsung Gear S2, automation platform If This Then That and others.

In 2012, the German speaking countries Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Lichtenstein decided to work closer together on Open Government and Open Data. By signing the “Diskussionspapier zur Open Government Data-Zusammenarbeit in der DACHLI-Region“ (Discussion paper on Open Government Data-collaboration in the DACHLI region) the countries agreed to organise annual meetings and share best practices. After rotating locations of the previous meetings, the annual meeting returns to where the founding paper was signed, Berlin; where the meeting is scheduled for 9-10 May. During this gathering several aspects of Open Data will be discussed and during the afternoon attention will be given to Use Cases from the region.
