In a draft response to the UK Consultation on privatising the UK Land Registry, the ODI has warned that economic value could be lost and accessibility to data placed at risk if it is put in the hands of private owners. Research commissioned by the ODI from lobbying consultants Lateral Economics showed core government open data assets are of greater value to the economy compared to data people have to pay for. According to the research, these assets can inject an additional 0.5 per cent of GDP into the economy, amounting to £9bn in the UK.

If you are renting out a room in Paris, you may want to make sure that you are registered as an Airbnb host. Otherwise, your annoyed next-door neighbor may call the authorities and tell on you. This is because Paris officials launched a new section of the city’s open data portal on Tuesday, May 10, that reveals the residents who are have properly registered as a host on the lodging website. The portal allows residents to inform their annoying neighbors that they could rat on them if they don’t get their act together and report those who are not playing by the rules. Those who are renting a place for Airbnb users without being a registered host could be slapped with a $28,000 fine if they are caught.

Many Americans’ electronically stored medical data is likely unsecured and inaccurate, according to panelists at the Health Datapalooza on Tuesday. “There are real-world consequences to medical data sharing,” said privacy and medical attorney Neal Eggeson. “This is happening every day; I am getting these phone calls every day.” Eggeson argued that access to personal medical data is not only easy for those working in or able to hack the health care industry, but that there is very little people can do about their own medical data being exposed. “HIPAA [Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act] has a specific provision that prevents you from suing anyone over your medical data,” he said. “Ninety percent of those who call me, I can’t help.

After a tumultuous first few months under new city CIO Charlie Brennan, the Office of Innovation and Technology’s civic tech and open data teams are moving to a different department. Led by Chief Data Officer Tim Wisniewski, the two teams will become the Office of Open Data and Digital Transformation and report to Chief Administrative Officer Rebecca Rhynhart, the city announced this morning. “This will allow OIT to focus on the core legacy systems and IT services to departments that are sorely in need of modernization,” Rhynhart said in a statement. “At the same time, this new structure elevates the prominence of the initiatives of open data and digital transformation.” With Wisniewski at the helm of the office, it’s a return to the leadership structure that existed before Brennan.

Today, Mayor Jim Kenney announced the creation of a new office focusing on opening city data to the public and updating the government website. The current two-person Open Data team will join the seven other people tasked with redesigning the city’s main website to create the Office of Open Data and Digital Transformation. The new office will be supervised by Rebecca Rhynhart, the city’s chief administrative officer instead of the Office of Innovation and Technology (OIT). “This will allow OIT to focus on the core legacy systems and IT services to departments that are sorely in need of modernization,” Rhynhart said in a press release.  “At the same time, this new structure elevates the prominence of the initiatives of open data and digital transformation.

Lidar mapping in the Province is now available under an open license via Nova Scotia’s Open Data Portal. Lidar (Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging) is described as an optical remote sensing technology which measures properties of scattered light and/or information of a distant target. It combines laser, GPS and inertial navigation systems to produce highly accurate topographic maps with accuracy within a few centimetres. Lidar data is utilized in various ways including Coastal Flood Mapping, Geological mapping, Transportation, Forestry and Archaeology.  Lidar, an extremely accurate mapping tool, enables better decision making for Nova Scotians.

Following a report that suggested Philadelphia’s Chief Information Officer Charlie Brennan’s management style has not been well-received among some of his employees, Mayor Jim Kenney moved two of the office’s teams to another city office. Kenney announced Tuesday that the current two-person Open Data team and seven-person team working on overhauling the city’s website — aka the Alpha team — will move from the Office of Innovation and Technology (OIT) to the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), which was created by Kenney to enhance the efficiency of city government. These teams are now combined under one name: Office of Open Data and Digital Transformation. They will be overseen by Chief Data Officer Tim Wisniewski.
