Should an academic institution refund its financial payment if the basic science or pre-clinical results prove to be irreproducible? Such an “incentive-based approach” for improving data reproducibility was recently proposed by a senior executive at Merck, although the idea is said not to represent the company’s position. But in an editorial published by The BMJ today, Eric Topol, Director of Scripps Translational Science Institute in California, argues that there are better solutions to the “reproducibility crisis” in research. He discusses the problems of irreproducibility in biomedical research—and says what is missing is the deep commitment—across academia and the life science industry—for open science and open data.

Ever wonder how many inventions for better mousetraps get patented? Cookware? Gene splicing? Now you can see – and graph it – for yourself. The Patent and Trademark Office has launched a project aimed at making its vast storehouse of open data – publicly available data that can be freely accessed and used by anyone — useful to people who will probably never file for a patent. During the past two months, the office has published an array of data visualizations—charts and graphs—illustrating the range of information that patent data can convey. The visualizations were built with automated data streams known as application programming interfaces, or APIs.

Last year’s interim Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) report into retail banking allowed the banks to breathe a little easier. Their worst fears were not realised – they weren’t to be broken up. Instead, the recommendations were that they should advertise the 7-day switching service more aggressively, and nudge customers to review their financial situation at certain ‘trigger points’. The full report released this week has been grabbing headlines thanks to the demand that banks cap overdraft fees, a long-running bête noire for UK consumers. But the major ramifications for banking may lie in the less-reported details of the report, where the CMA aims to help foster better competition, especially around small business banking.

Martín has worked as eGovernment consultant at CTIC since 2007, specialized in the Open Government field. He has participated in the development of over a dozen of Open Government Data initiatives in Europe, and he is part of various working groups at W3C and in the European Commission’s Joinup, for the standardization of technologies in the Open Data an PSI re-use field. ‘Internet of Things’ and ‘Open Data’, two buzzwords belonging to different worlds. The California Department of Technology’s new innovation lab will be a place where government can try unconventional or radical ideas that encourage experimentation, its director Scott Gregory says. “That may scare some folks — ‘radical’ and ‘unconventional’ in government. Those two don’t often reside in the same sentence or conversation. But we aim to do that,” Gregory said during a May 12 technology conference in Sacramento. The lab being launched within the Office of Digital Innovation and Technology Engagement is a space where users can experiment with open source code via Redhat OpenStack. It will will be housed in the state’s private cloud.

Does IT Need DevOps Managers? My personal view is NO. It needs DevOps for sure, but not Devops Managers. There is a simple explanation and a more well defined, elaborate explanation to this question though. The simple explanation first. A manager’s role needs to be associated with some outcome. A Project Manager – is responsible for the outcome of successful project, a Business Manager – is responsible for the outcome of… My personal view is NO. Late last year, as the government indicated it was prepared to water down the Freedom of Information Act, industry publication Press Gazette launched a petition. It was one of a range of factors which led to a promise to leave the Act alone. This year we face a similar threat. But the industry press is silent. Press Gazette say nothing. Hold The Front Page is empty of reference. What am I talking about? The Land Registry. The government is holding a consultation on moving Land Registry operations to the private sector, and with one week left the industry press needs to wake up. Land Registry data has been part of some of the biggest stories of the last 12 months.

The amount of Open Data available is growing by the day, but most of it keeps on being published in their raw shape such as .csv .json or other formats. While the value of this data can be enormous, you need to process or visualise the data to analyse it and obtain new insights. Thus far, these visualisation have been primarily on your screen, two scientists from Linnaeus University, Sweden, are taking visualisations one step further. Aris Alissandrakis and Nico Reski are currently conducting research on the exploration and interaction of Open Data in a virtual and augmented reality environment. This could enable you not to only see mapped data on a screen, but to actually walk around and interact in a visually displayed environment. An example of this application can be seen in this .
