Using publicly available data, The Varsity has compiled statistics on all parking tickets issued at UTSG and UTSC. The City of Toronto issued over 2 million parking tickets in 2015. Among these, 27,631 tickets with almost almost $1.3 million in fines were issued at UTSG. The hotspots for parking tickets issued on the St. George campus were on St. George Street, King’s College Circle, Devonshire Place, and Hart House Circle. There were 3,069 tickets issued on St. George Street, with 277 outside of Sidney Smith Hall, 266 outside of Lash Miller Chemical Laboratories, and 626 in the Robarts Library and Innis College area. Combined, the fines on St. George amounted to about $157,860. Parking tickets were issued 1,194 times at King’s College Circle, totalling $35,790 in fines.

As the internet social turf wars continue to mature, the land grab is becoming much better understood. With a few companies controlling 95 percent of the social data, the internet is more closed and much more controlled than ever before. The term (and concept behind) big data has been thrown around a lot over the past 15 months. What I’m referring to here is user data, primarily from social businesses that can be leveraged to build other apps and businesses if done within the confines of a company API. A few basic examples. Let’s take Facebook: A developer, product architect, entrepreneur, etc. may want to analyze names, pictures or shares. How about Snapchat: shares or number of sent items.  Instagram: users, hearts or comments. Tesla: car location, energy consumption, last charge.

Algorithms have become a ubiquitous and essential part of business operations. Uber uses algorithms to determine customer demand and set pricing accordingly, while Amazon and Netflix use algorithms to nudge their customers to purchase a product or stream a new video they might like. And these examples are just the tip of the iceberg. Interestingly, the use of these algorithms can not only increase an enterprise’s internal efficiency, but often algorithmic software or machine learning algorithms can also be used to deepen consumer loyalty and trust. Viewers on Netflix trust algorithms to deliver content they’ll enjoy, just as customers trust Amazon to offer only useful products for purchase.

The headline in a recent NYC press release caught my eye: “MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL LAUNCH SEARCHABLE OPEN BUDGET FOR NEW YORK CITY”.  I was pretty excited.  As mentioned in my talk on Ted, NYC has entombed this data in PDFs for years, making it basically impossible to analyze and understand what is going on.   But for the first time, we can actually do things like look at the top spending for each agency.   This is a big deal. The bad news in all of this is that the City only put this year’s budget (FY2017) on the Open Data portal and left all prior years off. This makes it impossible to look for trends and year-to-year changes, which is exactly what is most interesting in a budget – so that was a real disappointment from a progressive administration.

At Disney World infancy ends at 3, or at least that is the age children have to start purchasing tickets. It seemed appropriate to celebrate our 4th birthday there. Or at least at the #ISMB16 Computational Biology meeting that was held this week at the Walt Disney World Resort. Here we report on what happened and how we and the field have been growing up GigaScience originally launched at the 2012 ISMB (Intelligent Systems of Molecular Biology) meeting in Long Beach, and every subsequent year ISMB has held a special place in our hearts (see all the previous write-ups in GigaBlog). The conference and field itself has changed enormously since the first meeting 24 years ago, and we’ve seen a lot of developments just in the short time since we’ve been attending.

Policies on data analytics and open data are also to be launched, says IT Secretary Cyber security, data analytics and open data are the three sectors for which Telangana Government will come with a policy each in September, IT Secretary Jayesh Ranjan said here on Friday. Four sectoral policies were released along with the IT policy in April and three more will come in September, he told presspersons on the sidelines of a seminar on e-commerce organised by trade and industry body, the Federation of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTAPCCI). Creating a legal framework for data exchange and putting in place emergency response team are some of the features of the policies, he replied to queries.
