The City of Toronto is taking steps toward investing in the power of data to help understand how, where, and when people travel and how the City can use this information to better assist the public move around Toronto. Thus, Transportation Services is announcing the creation of a “Big Data Innovation Team.” The City says the team will be spending the first few months developing a strategy for how to use big travel data to improve travel by all modes. “The availability of travel data has improved dramatically over the past few years and is at a point where the City can – and should – be using it to better understand travel patterns, evaluate the City’s investments and monitor performance,” said Mayor John Tory.

The City of Greater Sudbury, apparently, is going to become more open. It said so last week in a news release. “The principles of Open Government are perfectly aligned with the Charter of Greater Sudbury and reflect the overall desire of council to deliver transparency and responsiveness to citizens,” Mayor Brian Bigger said a statement, noting council is also on board. Open Government, the city added, is based on the principles of open information, open data, open dialogue and open doors. “The Open Government model builds on the accountability and transparency systems that our organization has already established,” added chief administrative officer Doug Nadorozny. “I am excited to move the model forward in different ways in the coming months and years.

To combat frustration with Toronto’s growing congestion problems, Toronto Mayor John Tory unveiled a plan this week to use traffic data to better understand “how, where and when people travel.” “The availability of travel data has improved dramatically over the past few years and is at a point where the City can – and should – be using it to better understand travel patterns, evaluate [its] investments and monitor performance,” said Mayor Tory. “With this information, we can get Toronto moving smarter. This will be a game changer and will establish Toronto as a leader in running a truly smart city.” The announcement came shortly after TomTom released a report that said Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa were the most congested cities in Canada.

To support the president’s Climate Data Initiative, the White House revealed on Tuesday, April 7, a series of data projects and partnerships that includes more than 150 new open data sets, as well as commitments from Google, Microsoft and others to cultivate climate analysis. The undertakings were released at a White House climate and health conference where John Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, pressed the need for greater data to compel decreases to greenhouse emissions. “This is a science-based administration, a fact-based administration, and our climate policies have to be based on fact, have to be based on data, and we want to make those data available to everybody,” Holdren said.

A new report by the IBM Center for The Business of Government looked at cities that have cracked that code, and offers a how-to guide of sorts for other municipalities. “Increasingly, cities are the public sector service delivery engines in the United States,” write the authors of “Using Innovation and Technology to Improve City Services.

Bus and train commuters in Calgary will be able to track their rides in real time with Wednesday’s release of the Calgary Transit app for smartphones. Now available for iPhone and Android, the app provides access to both schedule data and real-time data, including updates on the status of trains and buses, gathered by GPS installed in each vehicle. “I’ve always said that real-time data is a game-changer,” Mayor Naheed Nenshi said. Using the same functionality introduced on the Calgary Transit website late last year, Nenshi said the app will make the experience of riding transit better. Knowing whether the bus is going to be late or early allows people to better plan out their days, he said.

In Canada there are a number of Provincial OpenData portals providing open, public access to a variety of data products, spatial data layers, tools, APIs and other useful resources. Sadly there really isn’t a consistent method for archival and maintenance of such data resources, each Province seemingly developing their own gateway or portal for hosting data while data themes and formats available vary from Province to Province. Detroit residents can now report abandoned vehicles, broken fire hydrants and other issues via a smartphone app. The software, called Improve Detroit, is designed to supplement complaints made to the city Ombudsperson and better communicate problems to city departments. Detroit Chief Information Officer Beth Niblock says data from the app will be available publicly. “We are actually putting the data that comes from Improve Data over onto the open data portal. You can actually see heat maps of reported problems, you can drill through, you can see when they were reported, and then you can go and see the closeout rates.” The city is also offering apps to track Detroit buses and provide information about the police department. Improve Detroit is now available for download.

Islanders will have more access to public information if the PC Party wins the next election, says party leader Rob Lantz. In speaking to the media during a policy announcement, Lantz said a PC government would create a new online portal to give Islanders access to public data. “I think this is a new era for open government in Prince Edward Island for accessibility to information and a real platform for innovation and growth,” he said. Lantz made the announcement Monday morning in Charlottetown where he was flanked by eight candidates on hand to hear the promise of open government, open information and open data.
