GATINEAU, QC, April 29, 2015 /CNW/ – Independent research and knowledge translation projects supported through the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s 2015-2016 Contributions Program will explore a wide range of emerging privacy issues, such as fitness tracking devices, lawful access and children and privacy policies. “The projects selected this year will help build a greater understanding of new risks to privacy and also provide individuals and organizations with information about how to better protect personal information in a constantly evolving environment,” says Privacy Commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien. The Commissioner also announced today that the Contributions Program has been renewed for another five years following an independent evaluation of the Program.

Recently, Carl Malamud and his site public.resource.org scored a victory in a long-running effort to give the public better access to data on America’s nonprofits. The IRS was trying to deny a FOIA request for form 990s filed electronically by nine tax-exempt charitable organizations, claiming that it would be too costly to release the records in the machine-readable format that was requested by public.resource.org in its original FOIA. United States District Judge William H. Orrick of California wasn’t particularly impressed with this argument, and ordered the IRS to produce the records as requested. Judge Orrick identified some pretty significant problems with the IRS’ argument.

Cities are using existing technology initiatives to make data more accessible, according to a recent IBM study. The report, “Using Innovation and Technology to Improve City Services,” by the IBM Center for The Business of Government, examined how cities are using innovative policies, governance structures and technologies to improve city services. The author, Sherri Greenberg, examined 12 U.S. cities with reputations for using innovation and technology to improve the services they provide to their residents. She cited a variety of success factors, including a city’s policies and platforms, third-party partnerships and the framework for a successful funding initiative.

The Open Cloud Consortium (OCC) is pleased to announce an agreement with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to make more of NOAA’s extensive environmental data available to the public. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker presented attendees with a first glimpse of the potential these collaborations offer on April 21st during a keynote at the American Meteorological Society’s Washington Forum. The OCC data alliance will leverage existing partnerships in the research, nonprofit, and commercial community, along with the OCC’s pioneering experience building, managing, and curating “data commons” and their surrounding ecosystems to implement the administration’s vision of open data access.

Jersey City, New Jersey is launching a new crime alert system with the help of a local open data group. Open JC, a project of Friendship Ambassadors Foundation, will build the system with the support of a $250,000 Google Ideas grant made through the Tides Foundation. The project will pilot a “smart crime” alert system in Jersey City aimed at helping residents have greater situational awareness around public safety. Through the pilot system, residents in the selected areas will receive alerts on their mobile devices about crime incidents from the Jersey City Police Department’s open data from the 911 system. The city says it hopes that it the alert system will decrease the reliance on anecdotes which shape the perception of crime levels in neighborhoods.

Business information service Owler has launched an API suite that opens up the startup’s dataset of over 10 million companies so that developers can access company information programmatically via API. The initial API available is the free CompanyAPI that allows basic searches by company name. This returns the company’s full trading name, their address, phone number, and website. Additional (free-for the-time-being) APIs are also available. The first extends the CompanyAPI to enable parameter searches so that users can also retrieve some financial data about a company (estimated revenue, stock exchange ticker code, employee counts, etc.) and the name of the CEO.

That may be true, but there’s a catch: The water’s bottled in a part of California where people’s wells are running dry. The bottled water industry in California has recently come under vicious criticism, and rightly so. Bottled water isn’t sucking up as much water as you might think, but as the drought has forced many industries to scramble for alternate resources-or go without completely -many see the bottling and selling of the state’s water as unethical.

We don’t mean to brag, but we’re a pretty big deal when it comes to allergies. Last year, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America named Louisville, with a full 100-point score, Number One on its list of spring allergy capitals and the “Most Challenging Place to Live with Spring Allergies.” For 2015, the organization places Louisville at Number Two on the list, giving Jackson, Mississippi the winning slot. Your nose, though, probably won’t be able to tell the difference. The American Lung Association today released State of the Air report data, showing slight improvement in Jefferson County air quality overall, but giving the county a “B” for particle pollution grade and an “F” for ozone (smog) grade (see the summary for more information on these pollutants).
