Director and senior partner of the firm, Makepeace’s appointment comes during a restructure of the growing Glentworth Board of Directors, with founder Neil Glentworth appointed as executive chairman. With millennials making up just 7 percent of the federal workforce in 2013 — an eight-year low — federal managers acknowledge that in order to make their agencies representative of the American public, they need to hire quite a few more twenty and thirty- somethings. Understanding “Generation Y,” a generation that is often characterized as lazy, entitled and far too dependent on technology, is a challenge for government leaders, too. Sean Herron, 25, and Annalee Flower Horne, 29, both started working for GSA’s 18-F innovation lab about six months ago. Their outlook on government and the work they do is anything but lazy or entitled. “I like being of service,” said Flower Horne, an innovation specialist at 18F.

The Big Data Tech Forum 2015, held at the Kingsbury on the 28th of April, was more or less a giant conference on big data – including its evolution, challenges and opportunities and its impact on business intelligence. The event boasted a number of distinguished speakers in the tech industry and as with any event, this event kicked off with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp and the singing of the national anthem. Abbas Kamrudeen, President, FITIS Software Chapter, addressed the audience with his welcome speech, paving the stage for Muhunthan Canagey to deliver the keynote. According to Muhunthan, ICTA is on the verge of initiating a big data project.

As one of my priorities within parliament’s environment, public health and food safety committee, eHealth is the subject of two of my written declarations – ‘Ethical dilemmas in relation to technical innovation’ and ‘eHealth’. In addition, I have raised eHealth in numerous questions to the European commission as it holds many possibilities for bringing about decisive advances in healthcare systems within the member states of the EU. ICT technologies, which could also be linked to wearable devices, can bring improve care methods and life expectancy, reduce costs and management fees and help in the decentralisation of health policies. The United Kingdom government has commissioned a study of the feasibility of UK banks giving customers the ability to share their transactional data with third parties via an open standard API. First mentioned alongside the autumn statement back in December, the chancellor has now outlined plans for a mandatory open banking API standard during the recent budget in March. Increased competition and the unbundling of bank services by innovative financial tech developers is continuing to provide customers with more services. Significant changes to banking have become inevitable, and at a first glance this move could be interpreted as penalizing banks.

Re:publica is one of the world’s biggest conferences about digital culture, which makes it an extremely apt setting to discuss the South2South Manifesto – a set of principles for using digital technology to support freedom of expression and access to information in the Global South. The re:publica session on Wednesday 6 May brings together three innovators from Guatemala, Cambodia and Kenya. The three – along with eleven other journalists, activists and media development specialists from the Global South – helped craft the South2South manifesto with DW Akademie.
