Over the next couple of days, we’re looking forward to discussing open data successes, challenges, and impact to-date at the International Open Data Conference. Hosted by the Government of Canada, Canada’s International Development Research Centre, and the World Bank, hundreds of individuals from around the world will gather in Ottawa to exchange ideas and work together to enable the Data Revolution. DG will be participating in three panels over the next couple of days, covering a broad range of data types and transparency experiences. On Tuesday, officials announced that the California Department of Managed Health Care has published its first datasets to the state’s Open Data Portal, Techwire reports (Techwire, 5/27). The Web portal, launched by the California Health and Human Services agency, aims to improve public health through data-based research or innovations. The California Department of Public Health first made the data portal public in August 2014. The Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, which has a long history of releasing datasets, later joined the portal (Gorn, California Healthline, 11/4/14).

Today, we are proud to announce the beta launch of the Open Data Impact Map a project of Center for Open Data Enterprise, as part of the Open Data for Development (OD4D) network. The Map is a searchable centralized database of hundreds of open data use cases from over 50 countries. The Map includes examples from the Center’s research, previous studies, and a growing network of 18 Regional Supporters in 18 countries who are helping to collect use cases. The Map visualization allows you to view the world of open data use cases in a way that has not been possible before.

A hackthon is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development and hardware development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively on software projects. Hackathons typically last between a day and a week. Some hackathons are intended simply for educational or social purposes, although in many cases the goal is to create usable software. This popular forum for collaborative innovation has become an important method for developing modern solutions for government interactions. This particular hackathon occurred on April 11-12 in Washington, D.C.

What is the biggest challenge facing the world today? For me, I’d contend it’s urbanization. By 2025, we could see 40 megacities around the globe — meaning cities with populations of 10 million or greater. According to the United Nations, 85 percent of the world’s population will be crammed into urban centers by mid-century. So how will we get around when urban areas get more crowded? We need a physical and electronic network in which both public and private transportation systems will seamlessly coexist. Mobility of the future depends on having the openness and flexibility needed to build a better urban network. And that need exists in virtually every urban area, not just in the megacities of tomorrow.

The conference “Open Research Data: Implications for Science and Society” will take place in Warsaw, Poland, on May 28–29, 2015. It is organized by the Open Science Platform — an initiative of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling at the University of Warsaw with the partnership of different Open Data organizations, including RDA. RDA Secretary General, Mark Parsons will also be attending the event on 28 May during the “Keynote lectures” session. The opening of research data is – next to the open publishing of scientific papers – a central aspect of Open Science. Research data is recognized as one of the key outputs of the scientific process. Properly managed data is a valuable resource for scientists, who can then freely use, re-use and combine it.
