Open data has been adopted by large and small companies across every sector in the UK, according to research published this week by the Open Data Institute (ODI). Identified by Startups.co.uk as one of the biggest tech trends of 2015, open data is defined as that which is freely available, and not subject to restrictions from copyright, patents or other forms of control. The study, conducted with 270 small, medium and large firms, found that the majority  of business owners are using, producing or investing in open data as part of the daily running of their business.

Health and Human Services’ IDEA Lab just launched a new beta version of its HealthData.gov site, the agency’s central repository for open data. The new beta launch redesigned the five-year-old site with a crisper interface, better search tools and access to more data sets and an API. As the site is refined and updated, HHS plans to add new features, as well, like a data set previewer and visualization options. “We really want to create an ability for people to use the data and not have to be a data scientist to do so,” said Damon Davis, director of the IDEA Lab Health Data Initiative.

T-Systems International GmbH will award the prize for its Big Data Challenge to the best Copernicus application or service idea established during a four-week sandbox exercise (end of June to end of July). This exercise session will be held on a big data analytics platform designed to derive on-demand intelligence from Earth observation data. After submitting their promising service ideas by 31 May, a number of finalists will be selected and invited to a training and interaction session at the start of the exercise. The platform will provide satellite data, analytics tools, standard interfaces, and workflow management to assist the participants in creating new services.

Answer: they’re all Open Energy Data stakeholders that have contributed to recent Open Energy Data assessments in Nairobi and Accra, two rapidly growing cities. Cities are home to half of the world’s population, and are responsible for more than two-thirds of global energy use. By 2050, the population living in cities is expected to reach nearly 70 percent, and energy consumption and related carbon emissions are expected to rise accordingly. As a result of these realities, securing access to reliable and affordable electricity in the biggest and fastest-growing cities is an important cornerstone of a sustainable future.

Plans are coming together for “Data Independence Day,” when consumers demand electronic access to their health information, but organizers want to position it more as a movement than an event tied to the July 4 holiday. At in Washington this week, ex-national health IT coordinator Dr. Farzad Mostashari led the unofficial kickoff with some fanfare. A health-care related hacakthon this weekend already has attracted about 100 participants. That’ a lot of people for a hackathon in Sacramento, but this one is offering some serious cash prizes. The Health 2.0 Developer Challenge at UC Davis Medical Center seeks to find innovative uses for the massive public data sets available at the California Health and Human Services Open Data Portal. The data portal includes workforce statistics, health care information, environmental studies, demographics and all kinds of other information from various studies, research papers and just compiled facts. A total of $20,000 in cash will be awarded at the California State Health Data Codeathon, with $10,000 for first place, $5,000 for second, third place and audience favorite each getting $2,500.

If you’ve ever tried your foolhardy luck against the powers of Philadelphia’s parking enforcement, you’ve probably learned, ticket in hand, that the odds of evasion are beyond lousy. Today, the City of Philadelphia released a massive heap of data supporting perceptions that the Philadelphia Parking Authority and other authorized agencies follow aggressive ticketing practices, to say the least. The new data set reflects a range of violation types that occurred throughout Philadelphia between January 2012 through March of this year, totaling nearly 4.9 million tickets. With the city’s population just over 1.5 million in July 2013, there were an average of about 3.15 tickets written per city resident over the last two years – despite a downward trend in households depending on cars.
