Saturday’s ‘unconference’ brought together stakeholders from across local central and government to look at direction for specialist digital services and collaboration Putting in place management models for devolved services, the role of data to inform a Government as a Platform (GaaP) approach for councils and the potential of a single digital space for libraries were among discussion topics during the weekend’s LocalGovCamp ‘unconference’. In separate ad-hoc sessions at the event, which was held in Leeds on Saturday (September 12) following a fringe event the day before, open data, GaaP, the use of Blockchain, web navigation and “redesigning local democracy” were among wider points under consideration.

Novak Djokovic faced 23 break points in the 2015 U.S. Open final against Roger Federer on Sunday. So how did he win depsite all of Federer’s break point opportunities? The College Scorecard provides a snapshot of what former students of each school might earn, how much debt they leave with, and what percentage can repay their loans. “Everyone should be able to find clear, reliable, open data on college affordability and value,” President Obama said in his weekly radio address Saturday. “Many existing college rankings reward schools for spending more money and rejecting more students — at a time when America needs our colleges to focus on affordability and supporting all students who enroll.” The department’s original scorecard had allowed users to search schools by majors offered, ZIP code, size and campus setting, among other things.

The White House has relinquished its efforts to grade colleges and universities. The announcement came during President Obama’s weekly address this weekend. The ambitious plan to maintain a college scorecard has been replaced with a more modest offering that will publish open data on individual institution costs, graduation rates and student debt and earnings, among other information. The administration emphasized that the new program was “designed with input from those who will use it the most — students, families and counselors.” But the goal remains the same: to help those users identify “which schools provide the biggest bang for your buck.” The original notion for a college scorecard was first broadcast during Obama’s 2013 State of the Union address.

New College Scorecard looks at earnings 10 years after students first enroll as way of giving more information about schools and earning potential. Students who have attended Rochester Institute of Technology showed the highest earnings among local colleges, according to new data posted on the White House’s College Scorecard. This scorecard looked at the median salary of former students 10 years after they first enrolled in a two- or four-year college. The median salary of RIT students who enrolled in 2001 and 2002 was $56,900 a decade later. University of Rochester students who enrolled back then had a median salary of $55,500 10 years later.

We use devices with sensors nowadays to monitor our personal fitness. Soon a group of researchers from Illinois laboratories and universities, including NIU, will use a vast array of sensors to track the fitness of one of the world’s great cities: Chicago. The University of Chicago (UChicago) announced today (Sept. 14) that the National Science Foundation has awarded a $3.1 million grant to support the development of “Array of Things”—a network of urban sensors that will serve as a fitness tracker for the city. It will measure data on Chicago’s environment, infrastructure and activity to scientifically investigate solutions to urban challenges ranging from air quality to urban flooding. The ultimate goal is to help make cities cleaner, healthier and more livable.

The Department of Education recently unveiled a set of new tools, including a redesigned College Scorecard and updated data on higher education institutions, to help students make better informed decisions about college. The College Scorecard is a mobile-friendly website where college-bound students, parents and advisors can search for colleges based on programs and degrees, location and size, and get details on college costs, graduation rates, average student debt levels and post-college earnings.  The Scorecard also include links to two-year and four-year college lists and rankings, other statistics and financial aid information. TRAVEL information for provincial highways, including road closures, planned work and extreme weather conditions, is now available in Open511 format as a real-time data feed that businesses and programmers can use to create new apps and online services for the consumer market. “Publishing DriveBC real-time data online and under the Province’s Open Government License opens up a world of possibilities for British Columbians to get driver information more seamlessly,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone on Monday. “Companies or individual developers could use this data with their online maps or in handheld apps, letting people know instantly about crashes, detours and extreme weather conditions as they plan or follow their route.
