The public is invited to three upcoming discussions to help Long Beach craft a policy related to open data, which includes what information should be released to the public related to the budget, inspections, code enforcement, crime, permits and lobbyist activities. “The Open Data Initiative gives the creative community and entrepreneurs access to our city’s data so that they can develop new ways to meet the needs of our city,” Mayor Robert Garcia in a statement. “This will improve efficiency, increase transparency, community engagement, and accountability, and drive further innovation.

All four candidates vying for the federal Kanata-Carleton seat squared off at an all-candidates meeting in Fitzroy Harbour over issues such as the recently-announced free-trade agreement, electoral reform, and data access and privacy. More than 150 people from across the riding showed up to the Oct. 8 meeting, hosted by the Arnprior and Region Federal of Agriculture, to hear candidates Walter Pamic (Conservative), Andrew West (Green), Karen McCrimmon (Liberal) and John Hansen (NDP) debate the issues. The City of Long Beach will host the first of three forums on Saturday, October 10 in an effort to develop the city’s policies for Open Data, the city announced Friday. Talent shortages aside, there is simply not enough manpower across government to manage that much data. That’s why the open data movement has been gaining traction in recent years. Government leaders realize that opening up their agencies’ data to the public enables individual citizens to find answers to their questions, make better decisions for themselves and their communities, and crowdsource solutions to our society’s most pressing challenges. This summer, the government social network GovLoop hosted its annual conference, “Data Done Smart: Your Guide to Data Analytics in Government,” in Washington, D.C.

PUNE: Ban or no ban, Indian cities account for the highest number of Google searches for porn.The latest Google Trends data shows that six of the top ten cities in the world keying in ‘porn’ on the search engine are in India. Leading the brigade of porn surfers are netizens from New Delhi, followed by Pune, Mumbai, Howrah, Unnao, Kuala Lumpur and Bangalore in that order.The data reflects both fetishes, and also perversion. Sociologists refuse to link online activity with offline behavior, and point out that key words used in Google searches are reflective of the continued curiosity around the three-letter word.Since 2008, the most number of ‘animal porn’ searches were from Pune, followed by New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

Online advertisers and publishers might get a lot smarter about their audiences’ offline habits, thanks to a new product from Quantcast called Audience Grid. Quantcast CEO Konrad Feldman described this as as “the largest open data marketing platform bridging the gap between offline and online.” As he explained it, Audience Grid connects Quantcast’s online data with data from partners like TiVo Research. Other audience targeting efforts have struggled online, Feldman argued, because “they don’t have any scale.” As a result, when advertisers launch broad campaigns at “Internet scale,” they’re forced to use “very simplistic descriptions of audiences” — usually just broad strokes like age and gender.

Big data: What does it mean to ‘do’ it?, the latest briefing from the Society of Information Technology Management (Socitm), argues local authorities should look to New York in order to learn how to drive ‘data-driven solutions’ locally. Drawing on recommendations from the think-tank Policy Exchange’s Capital City Foundation, Socitm urges London, and other major UK cities, to follow New York by setting up a Mayor’s Office of Data Analytic (MODA). Some areas, such as Leeds, Greater Manchester and Birmingham, have already developed open data initiatives. But, Socitm says, these places have nothing that parallels New York’s MODA, its staffing and resourcing.
