Several weeks ago, I had the pleasure of speaking about open data at the coIN Loft in Wilmington as part of Delaware Innovation Week. My talk focused on how Delawareans can help push state and local government to release more open data and, hopefully, adopt formal open data policies. Delaware already has a growing civic hacking community, and the turnout for Delaware Innovation Week shows that there is a deep and active developer community in the First State. The City of Wilmington appears to be moving closer to adopting open data, and there are currently some limited open data sets available from the State.  Continue…

Jon Jureidini, a research leader of the University of Adelaide’s critical and ethical mental health research group, remembers when he first read Study 329. The paper, published 14 years ago in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, found that antidepressants, in particular paroxetine (brand name Paxil), were safe and effective. Its results would be used as proof that such drugs could and should be used by adolescents. A staunch opponent of prescribing antidepressants to teens, Jureidini assumed that he had it all wrong. But the more he read, the more he started to see problems with the paper. “It was seemingly deliberately misleading. And I got more and more worried about it,” he says.

DevOps is a philosophy and concept intended to improve the process of software development and change management. By eliminating silos prevalent in traditional Development and Operations organizations, companies can build, test and release software, cloud applications or infrastructure changes more frequently and reliably. Two texts. That’s all it takes to avoid potential stomach pains in Evanston, Ill. Or at least, that was the goal behind an endeavor that pairs the city’s restaurant inspection scores on Yelp with text message alerts for diners. When the SMS program launched early in 2015 it was a quiet release. In fact, Erika Storlie, Evanston’s deputy manager, described the undertaking as more of a four-month side project than anything else. The city had just completed a project with Yelp to feed restaurant inspection scores to the review site and wanted to investigate joining the scores with its 311 non-emergency texting app. The problem was, Evanston’s 311 app required a person on the other end to retrieve or record data and submit replies.

Online gaming giant Tencent has struck separate deals with WPP’s GroupM and with Dentsu Aegis Network, giving access to data from the Chinese firm’s huge customer base of c.860m active monthly users.The two ad groups will use the data to help clients target Chinese consumers and for more general analysis of their attitudes and relations with brands, as well as for improved cross-device audience identification.Tencent already has a data sharing deal with Nielsen , announced in May last year, forming the basis of the audience measurement leader’s cross-device campaign measure Digital Ad Ratings in China. Corporate Vice President Steven Chang says the company observes strict standards and such deals will never compromise user privacy.

Call it “The Case of the Missing Tweet.” A politician sends out a controversial remark using Twitter. Then lo and behold, when public outcry begins, the tweet is suddenly nowhere to be found. It’s been deleted. Now though, thanks to an agreement between Twitter and a pair of government-transparency groups, you’ll again have access to a website that archives those tweets to make sure they’re part of the public record. Twitter announced the deal this week. The site, Politwoops, was disrupted earlier this year when Twitter stopped giving it access to code that made preservation of the tweets possible. The social network said at the time that it supported “increasing transparency in politics and using civic tech and open data to hold government accountable to constituents.

Great progress has been made in open data over the last few years, with most important facts and figures now available online. The quality of the UK economic debate has been enhanced by the creation of the Office for Budget Responsibility, which publishes forecasts in a non-tricksy way. The journalist is spoiled for choice. But, still, you don’t tend to see such forecasts republished: the BBC doesn’t share them and even the FT‘s ‘economy at a glance‘ restricts itself to historic data – and static graphs, which you can’t interrogate. At The Spectator, we’ve been using dynamic graphs for a while. Now, we’re moving up to the next level using HighCharts, a more versatile Norwegian graph-making engine. The below graphs are part of it.
