There are two years to go before the deadline set by the city’s 2012 Open Data Law, which requires city agencies identify and publish all their citywide aggregated public data online. At a Wednesday afternoon oversight hearing of the City Council’s Committee on Technology, open data and civic technology advocates offered praise for the city’s progress thus far and recommendations for the city to meet its goals. Open data is considered a vital transparency tool that allows citizens and government to evaluate and improve city services. New York City, considered a trendsetter in this area, committed to this goal in 2012 by passing a law that would make data easily accessible and consumable by the public.

Since 1991, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (or AFA) has provided funding to Alberta’s artists and arts organizations to create extraordinary art in their communities. The AFA also promotes the arts and manages an extensive art collection, featuring work from hundreds of artists from all over the province. AFA funding supports creative activity in the performing, visual, literary, and the film and video arts disciplines.

Support for data sharing as a means for improving the reliability of medical evidence and reinforcing evidence-based practice has grown steadily over the past 5 to 10 years. Over this time, several major research funders, including the US National Institutes of Health, the US Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, the UK Medical Research Council, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, have adopted policies supporting or mandating clinical research data sharing [3, 4]. Private industry, by far the biggest funder of clinical research, has similarly adopted supportive policies [5], perhaps even stronger than those adopted by government and non-profit funders [6].

The Australian government is planning to privatise the management of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission database of companies. This is a potentially damaging move which goes against the government’s own open data policy. On behalf of the Australian government, ASIC currently charges businesses and individuals around A$50 million each year for company searches. The information covers everything from details of shareholders and company officers (A$19 per document) and their roles and relationships with other bodies, to financial reports and records of charges over company assets (A$38 per document). It is undoubtedly a great money-spinner to charge members of the public more than A$1 per page for a downloaded pdf document.

Local hackers have shared in $3000 of prizes from the 2016 GovHack competition which aims to uncover new digital products and services that can benefit the community. Digital geeks, entrepreneurs, creative technologists, and savvy creators came together over the weekend of July 29-31 for the event, held simultaneously in 9 locations across Australia and New Zealand, with the Sunshine Coast event being held at Spark Bureau. Councillor Brian Stockwell from Noosa Council presented the Sunshine Coast awards at the GovHack Queensland State Awards on Friday, 2 September 2016 in Brisbane.

Markets in Asia traded mixed on Wednesday, with the Bank of Japan ‘s (BOJ) monetary policy decision due later hanging over traders’ heads. In Japan, the benchmark Nikkei 225 was lower by 0.43 percent, while the Topix index slipped 0.41 percent in morning trade. The Japanese yen traded at 101.66 against the dollar on Wednesday morning, a touch higher than its previous close at 101.69. In Australia, the ASX 200 gained 0.16 percent, with most sectors trading higher. The energy sector advanced 0.54 percent, while the materials sector added 0.43 percent. South Korea’s Kospi index traded flat at 2,026.13. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index traded flat at 23,527.92. Chinese mainland markets moved little in early trade, with the Shanghai composite flat at 3,020.

White House Chief Data Scientist DJ Patil started out as an underachieving high schooler who was bad at math, he revealed during a recent Q&A on answer crowdsourcing site Quora. Patil, named chief data scientist last February, also told readers this week the government is increasingly interested in data; today, at least 25 top government leaders are focused on it fulltime. In Patil’s tenure, he’s worked on projects including the Precision Medicine Initiative, which seeks to invest in technology that could tailor medical treatment to an individual patient’s genetic makeup and lifestyle; a series of workshops exploring potential uses for artificial intelligence in government; and research into the impact of big data techniques on citizens’ civil rights.

UNITED NATIONS — A two-day global summit held this week aims to encourage governments, the private sector and universities to share and analyze troves of agricultural and nutritional data to better feed the world’s hungriest people. “It’s an incredibly important initiative … because the future of our capacity to meet the challenges … of feeding an ever-increasing world population in a nutritious way is only going to get more difficult with the changing climate,” said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, who spoke to a gathering of more than 400 people Friday at the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition initiative in Manhattan.

At the groundbreaking GODAN Summit 2016 being held in New York on the 15th and 16th of September, India’s Sai Krishna Dandamudi of VARI has been selected as one of the three finalists of the innovative Open Data Challenge. The challenge aimed to uncover new, innovative ways to unleash the power of open data and solve specific challenges in agriculture and nutrition, to enable policy makers, farmers and the open data community to make significant steps forward in the release, management and use of open data. Dandamudi was awarded second place for his inputs on ‘Creating an online marketplace for farmers to secure better prices for crops, in coordination with government data’ under the Policy Challenge.
