Edmonton has been lauded as a trailblazer in Canada for its open-data initiatives, beating Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary on an annual ranking list. Open data is a practice that makes data freely available, easy to access, and simple for the public to reuse and redistribute. Public Sector Digest and Canada’s Open Data Exchange chose Edmonton as the leader among 34 of the largest municipalities in Canada in the 2015 Open Cities Index. Those 34 municipalities represent 41 per cent of the country’s population. The index compares 107 variables of open-data programs and measures the readiness, implementation, and impact of the participating cities’ open-data initiatives.
