Will Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s “sunny ways” extend to letting the sunlight shine on more government information? Like federal Information Commissioner Suzanne Legault, we’re cautiously optimistic — based on Mr. Trudeau’s remarks and actions thus far. But we are waiting to see “concrete steps,” in Ms. Legault’s words, before giving the new government credit. Canadians’ right to look at government documents has been enshrined since the Access to Information Act came into force in 1983. But that legislation, little changed despite sweeping technological advances in the intervening decades, has become badly outdated.
