During a meeting Dec. 15, congressional leadership and legislative branch agencies made a firm commitment to publishing the status information of bills from the 113th Congress onward in a machine-readable format. With bipartisan backing, the Government Publishing Office, Library of Congress, Clerk of the House and Secretary of the Senate plan to make bill statuses in eXtensible Markup Language, or XML, available here, through the GPO’s Federal Digital System Bulk Data repository. During the technical meeting this week, open data groups, legislators and others met to review bill status XML files on a sample of 10 bills and a draft user guide made available by the GPO on its GitHub page last week.
