Michigan’s government agencies are in the midst of a major push to pool their disparate data sets and make that information more open to the public. According to Chief Information Officer David Behen, the state’s “Enterprise Information Management” effort is helping Michigan’s agencies answer the question of “‘How do we bring our data together and use that data in a really positive way?’” Behen said several agencies are piloting the new information-sharing system, with some using the shared data to detect fraud across agency programs, or even examining lists of families using free lunch programs at schools “to identify other programs that they’re eligible for.” As the agencies begin to share that data, Behen said they’ll also work to add it to the state’s open data portal.
