SAN JOSE — To find out how much the city spends on police, libraries or parks, you previously would have been stuck sifting through lengthy budget documents online or digging through countless pages tucked inside a 6-inch binder. But a new program, set to be unveiled at a news conference Tuesday, will give San Jose residents the ability to view the city’s finances through an interactive and user-friendly Internet portal. The open data portal, powered by OpenGov, will cost about $10,000 in its first year, said Councilman Johnny Khamis, who secured $29,000 for the program. But the new system, the first of its kind for San Jose, will provide residents with access to information in easy-to-digest chunks, he said.
