Last week’s conference in Dallas of the National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership wasn’t the kind that generates big downtown traffic jams. But when it comes to cutting-edge urban planning efforts and helping taxpayers understand their cities’ problems, this meeting was an eye-opener. Partnership members are the academics and public staffers tasked with analyzing statistics and making them come alive in meaningful ways for citizens and policymakers. They take figures on crime, poverty, education and health and turn them into interactive maps and charts that allow online users to visualize the good and the bad on the streets where they live.
