Dan Moser, president of Angus Genetics, Inc., said overall the American Angus Association has had a very open policy about data. Data has been collected by Angus producers on thousands of animals through the years to help build a database to improve the breed. “The beef and dairy industries have been different from the pork and poultry industries, as cattle organizations share data openly among each other for the good of the producers and the organizations,” said Moser. McFarland-Livingston believes in collecting data on all aspects of their herd, starting at birth and continuing as the animal is in the herd. Weights are taken at birth, weaning and yearling ages. They have also started taking DNA samples on all animals prior to weaning for use in genetic testing.
