WASHINGTON — When President Obama announced a White House police data initiative last month, he said he hoped it would help police “strengthen their work and hold themselves accountable by sharing it with the public.” But some police may not want to share. The initiative has run into privacy hurdles, most notably in Charlotte, which was supposed to be at the vanguard of a program to analyze data on police interactions to give early warnings of problem officers. That program faces a key test Monday, when Charlotte City Council considers an ordinance that would allow its police department to share data with researchers at the University of Chicago. The chairwoman of the safety committee told USA TODAY she won’t support it as long as officers have privacy concerns.
