Many have admired Microsoft Microsoft for its recent ‘advances’ towards open technologies and the community contribution model as characterized by the open source movement in general. Others have remained happy to vilify and castigate the firm’s MS Open Tech open source unit and related movements ever since its inception three years ago. Machinations and shenanigans notwithstanding, Redmond has inarguably made a positive contribution to open platforms in recent times. Such is the fervour and interest generated by the firm’s work in this area that a whole series of stories recently surfaced on the possibility of an eventual open sourcing of Windows – sources close to Microsoft suggest that this news tabloidization was arguably somewhat misreported on the basis of hearsay.
