The following was published Nov. 20, in The Vacaville Reporter. The warnings have been sounding for some time now, so it should not have surprised anyone to see the numbers in black and white posted online recently by State Controller John Chiang regarding the state’s 130 public pension systems. The decade of financial data posted by Chiang on his open-data website, ByTheNumbers.sco.ca.gov, shows that the state’s pension systems are carrying $198 billion in unfunded liability in 2013, compared with $6.3 billion of unfunded liability in 2003. With each passing year, California taxpayers are increasingly liable for billions more to cover retirement benefits for police, firefighters, teachers and other city, county and state public employees. And make no mistake: It’s a big problem.
