Access to open data fuels innovation and new products – and one data evangelist believes it could eventually make the world a better place. Reliable raw data is the lifeblood of scientific research. Since it launched in 2009 the US government’s venture, data.gov, has grown to almost half a million datasets ‒ a vast resource available to anyone who wants to use it. Its goal is to fuel innovation and scientific research in areas such as health, the environment, space exploration and education. The agency’s ‘evangelist’, Jeanne Holm, encourages public and private bodies to access open government data. Already, these kinds of initiatives have created new products – for instance an asthma inhaler with a GPS chip that allows fellow sufferers to avoid areas which might trigger their condition.
