Software giant VMware has entered the Australian public cloud services market via Telstra, promising its vCloud Air service from early 2015. vCloud Air was launched in the US by VMware in 2013 as vCloud Hybrid Service and marked the company’s bid to retain customers as they began to migrate their applications from private to public clouds. It is based on VMware’s widely used vSphere virtualisation software enabling customers to easily migrate workloads from their private clouds or data centres to the public cloud. Erez Yarkoni, Telstra’s director cloud, told IT Pro the service would be generally available in February or March 2015 following customer trials in December and January.
