Photograph by: William Wolfe-Wylie , Canada.com Open data — the global movement that pushes governments to release their raw data in open and easily accessible formats — is no longer in its infancy. But how it matures is the subject of growing debate, as politicians who have little experience in this arena knock heads with technologists who do. Toronto’s open data team, a haphazard group of three full-time positions scattered between five or more people, recently hosted a meeting to debate whether the City of Toronto should open its own app store. For some on the political spectrum, an app store is a big gesture that can showcase how valuable the city’s data can be.
