Ben Reppert and two old Penn State classmates have dreamed up a meteorological map to predict where the best sunrises and sunsets will occur on any given day. Streaked with blue and golden hues, the SunsetWx.com is based on an algorithm they designed using cloud cover, pressure, humidity and other free data dumped daily by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “It’s quite interesting what you can do if you have this data available … and you put people with different minds and backgrounds together,” said Reppert, who began working with the data as a Liberty High School student. “You could do some pretty cool stuff.” And many are. In Philadelphia, for example, Code for Philly used regional demographic and other data to create a map of recommended routes for bicyclers.
