In the digital world, government needs to find innovative ways to interact with the public. Salinas is, therefore, launching an open data and civic engagement initiative designed to make its information more accessible. The goal is also to get residents to be more involved with local government. The project will focus on public safety in neighborhoods, a critical topic in a city facing gang-related violence. Over the past week, for instance, the city saw a string of violent crimes including a 15-year-old shot in the head who later died from his injuries. To promote a safer community, the city already has a number of active citizen-run groups in Salinas, including Neighborhood Watch.
