SnapRoute, a developer of open source networking software, on Tuesday announced that it has raised US$25 million in Series A financing from an investor group led by Norwest Venture Partners with new support from AT&T and Microsoft Ventures. SnapRoute, which was founded by CEO Jason Forrester and other former engineers from Apple, plans to use the funding to speed up the development of open source networking software for Fortune 500 firms. The company uses its software on commodity “white-box” switches and routers to create more streamlined and scalable data centers. Lightspeed Venture Partners is the lead seed investor.

Pittsburgh is taking its Burgh’s Eye View application, a map that displays municipal data sets ranging from police incident reports to 311 service requests, on tour, having its developers visit 14 neighborhoods throughout the city to simultaneously solicit feedback while spreading awareness of the program’s functionality. Burgh’s Eye View, which was built in-house, uses open source technology and data sets that were already available via Pittsburgh’s website. The app provides a centralized location for users to see information mapped out, ideally making it simpler for residents, neighborhood groups and activists to learn about the blocks where they work and live.

On Tuesday, Feb. 7, Florida’s Senate Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee voted unanimously to pass a new bill, SB 362, that would create a chief data officer position within the Agency for State Technology (AST). The bill came about following inconsistencies and security issues within AST that ultimately led to an audit of the state agency. The audit found several ways in which AST data could potentially be compromised during the login process and through unrestricted access privileges. One of the trickiest parts of proving the value of emerging smart city technology is showing how city residents could benefit from data being picked up by sensors located in such areas as on light poles and along streets. On Tuesday, officials in Kansas City, Mo., took steps to connect how such real-time data gathered by sensors provides benefits to its citizens. City officials unveiled an online interactive map for the public that shows available parking, traffic and KC Streetcar locations in real time with data gathered from 122 video sensors along a two-mile segment of Main Street in the downtown. Also, at a press conference on the same day, a city contractor asked the Alexa voice service running on an Amazon Echo device which city’s buses were running late.

A Senate committee has recommended that legislation criminalising the re-identification of de-identified datasets that are collected and published by the Commonwealth should be passed through Parliament despite concerns about the scope of the law, its reversal of the burden of proof, exemptions under it, and the retrospective nature of it. Under the laws introduced to the Senate in October, intentionally re-identifying a de-identified dataset will become punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment, with the laws to be retrospectively applied from September 29, 2016.

Recent decisions in the transportation sector and the subsequent public outcry have made it clear that open government is increasingly becoming a necessity. The goal of open government is to make government documents and other evidence available to the public for awareness, oversight and collaborative decision-making purposes. Closely linked to open government is open data, which explicitly provides the structured data to encourage public data explorations and innovation. In this context, the developers of the Guyana Geoportal (http://www.geoserver.ggmc.gov.gy) should be commended, and other agencies should be encouraged to make their data similarly available. The insights that can be derived from open data are invaluable.
