Data science benefits in the enterprise are being ignored Posted Thursday, February 16, 2017 by New research announced by Continuum Analytics, the creator and driving force behind Anaconda, an Open Data Science platform powered by Python, finds that 96 percent of data science and analytics decision makers agree that data science is critical to the success of their business, yet a whopping 22 percent are failing to make full use of the data available. An Information Technology (IT) entrepreneur, Mr David Alozie has called on Government at all levels to promote a data-driven culture among the citizenry. Alozie, who is the convener of Disruptive Africa Expo (DAX) told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that a data-driven culture would ensure that the country plugged into the digital economy. He said that government needed to be data-driven to ensure that companies were encouraged to provide data. Alozie said that in the digital economy, data had become the new wealth, and it could be a personal asset, corporate asset or national asset. According to him, there is need to have more data to help the Government render better services to the masses.

Today, MHIS staff led by a chief innovation officer (CIO) is made up of both city and Hartford Public Schools employees, with a unified financial system, a single user directory system, a single email system and a single phone system, according to a history page on the city of Hartford’s website. Windsor is at risk of a significant cyber attack, according to the city’s head of information technology, with hackers targeting personal information of employees and citizens in order to extort money. In fact, last year the city suffered two ransomware attacks — where hackers encrypt data and refuse to let victims access their own information unless money is paid. In Windsor’s case the blackmailers demanded about $8,000 worth of bitcoins, a hard-to-track online payment system, though the city’s information technology staff managed to quickly retrieve the frozen data from backups without paying the criminals a cent.

The White House has removed all of the information that was previously available through its open data portal, posting a message that encourages visitors to “check back soon for new data.” The old data, however, is still available through President Obama’s archive page, albeit in a format where some of the links are not functioning properly. On Thursday, Feb. 16, Alex Howard, deputy director of the Sunlight Foundation, took to Twitter to address the matter. The move has left questions over the Trump administration’s commitment to open data, as well as the future of digital government at the federal level.
