Today, the City of Bellevue launched its open data portal, which is intended to help the city share its progress in achieving intended results with residents and other stakeholders. The open data catalog includes free, easy to access data about Bellevue’s budget and expenditures, demographics, businesses and crime. “Bellevue has always been a results oriented city,” said Mayor John Stokes. “We are committed to using data and evidence to inform decision-making resulting in municipal services to get results for our community. The open data portal will also provide our community with easier access to government information.” Bellevue’s open data portal is part of “What Work Cities” engagement with Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Dewand Neely , who was recently appointed CIO for the State of Indiana, is improving the quality of life for citizens through the innovative use of data. Formerly with the Indiana Technology Office, Neely brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge about what it takes to make Indiana a data-driven state. The first major push came in 2014, Neely said during a webinar with StateScoop. Indiana Governor Mike Pence issued Executive Order 2014-06, to create the Government’s Management & Performance Hub, which runs on the Socrata platform.

Mayor Brian Bowman is pressing forward with plans to expand the city’s ability to share data with the public. Bowman said 27 data-sharing “opportunities” were identified by the city in a report given to his executive policy committee on Wednesday, with the public service asked to develop a policy towards releasing the data. The city’s open data portal was launched in July 2014 with an initial inventory of 68 data sets made publicly available in a format that can be read easily by a computer. Some of the opportunities identified by city staff include water quality test results, waste pickup stats, traffic counts, crime reports, and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service patient offloads. Bowman promised to expand the city’s data-sharing capabilities if elected mayor during the 2014 campaign.

PALO ALTO, CALIF. — California is hatching plans to pilot a next-gen open data portal to house all of its public agency data under one roof. The announcement came Friday, Feb. 12 from Stuart Drown, the deputy secretary for innovation and accountability from the recently formed California Government Operations Agency (CalGovOps). Drown said the initiative began in 2015 when CalGovOps experimented with the idea by launching a portal that included 11 data sets from three different departments. Following the launch was a state sustainability hackathon called GreenGov that aimed to get feedback, Drown said, adding that a prototype for the state’s portal can be found at Greengov.data.ca.gov.

London’s next mayor will need to put technology at the heart of his or her leadership if the city is going to maintain its blossoming tech sector and have a presence on the global stage. Tech London Advocates, TechUK and the Centre for London released the London’s Digital Future: The Mayoral Tech Manifesto 2016 last month, which urged the next London mayor to make sure that the capital has digital technology and innovation at its forefront. The manifesto calls for the next mayor to ensure that the rollout of superfast broadband covers ‘notspots’ in some areas of the city, improve the provision of digital skills in schools, communities and business, and boost visa allocation to attract people with digital skills from beyond the European Union (EU).

The provincial decision to make more than 130 collections of data publicly available is a welcome development. Announced last week by Premier Stephen McNeil, the decision comes about three years after Halifax committed to its “open data pilot project” which has since morphed into an established program. These are important steps for several reasons. First, the data belongs to the people. Anybody who wants that data should be able to get it. Second, researchers and entrepreneurs will use the data to create new products and their analyses will help governments design better public services. Third, these tiny steps should lead to a determined effort to assemble, in one place, massive quantities of community data from which vast new opportunities can be discovered.

As more and more of the world’s content is being digitized, refreshed and “remastered,” a big part of that movement is the digitization of government data. In 2009, the federal government launched data.gov, a platform for open, machine-readable digital data sets. The site, managed and hosted by the US General Services Administration, Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies, describes itself as: Various cities, counties and states also have their own sites like data.seattle.gov or data.houston.org. To simplify, data.gov and its child sites provide automated and often structured access to more than 191,500 sets of government data, available on the national or local level.
