MILAN, March 16 Italy’s Grandi Stazioni said on Wednesday seven potential bidders would start looking in detail at the railway retailer’s financial data in coming days as the group’s privatisation process advances. Grandi Stazioni said its shareholders Italian railways Ferrovie dello Stato and Eurostazioni had selected a short-list of possible buyers which included private equity firms Lone Star, BC Partners, Terra Firma, as well as Deutsche Asset Management together with ATP and Poste Vita. Grandi Stazioni reported a 10 percent rise in 2015 revenues to 231 million euros. Net profit rose 16 percent last year to 23 million euros, it said.

This is the second part out of a four part series reporting on the International Open Data Day Stockholm 2016. Read part I, II and III. Connected Open Heritage (Kopplat Öppet Kulturarv, KÖK in Swedish) is a project by Wikimedia Sweden. It aims to update and make our cultural heritage data more available on Wikimedia projects. When Pacific Northwest National Laboratory CIO Brian Abrahamson asked his IT staff to put more emphasis on customer experience, the team that handles monitoring and automation turned the spotlight on PNNL data. “We had the insight that we could use the data that we have to understand what our customers were experiencing,” said Daryl Anderson, chief infrastructure architect at the lab. The IT team’s primary objectives, he said, were to “understand how our operations are impacting our customers and what can we do to proactively make their experience better.” But that was difficult to do because of the glut of available information — about 400 gigabytes of data from 30 to 40 sources and about 13,000 devices.

It’s time to take wearable devices to the next level. Plume Labs and DigitasLBi have teamed up for an interesting experiment. What if pigeons could fly around London with tiny backpacks to measure air pollution during peak hours? I’m not sure if they were drunk when they thought about this idea, but 10 pigeons are currently flying above London for the next 3 days to do just that. The Pigeon Air Patrol is wearing custom-made backpacks that are as light as a feather. These backpacks monitor ozone, volatile compounds and nitrogen dioxide as well as the location of the pigeons. And they are adorable. These aren’t your average pigeons. The team is working with Brian and his racing pigeons to make sure that they are up to the task. A vet is also checking the pigeons regularly.

An Australian House of Representatives committee inquiry has recommended that a Smart Infrastructure Task Force be developed to coordinate, plan, develop, maintain, and optimise infrastructure and national policy on IT. Making use of new technologies and systems could boost the nation’s economy; enable smart cities; enhance communications, public transport, energy, health, and water; increase productivity; improve quality of life; and better predict the effects of natural disasters, the committee said. The Smart ICT Report on the inquiry into the role of smart ICT in the design and planning of infrastructure, tabled on Tuesday by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Infrastructure, Transport, and Cities, found that using smart IT systems is critical to the economy.

“Musical research in the past has focused on the composers, the performers and the musical works. The listeners have been absent,” says Professor David Rowland. “We are drawing on private sources such as diaries, letters and memoirs, to try and get at how ordinary people – soldiers in the trenches, the working classes in the nineteenth century – have really listened to music, and what impact it has had on them.” The research, funded with a grant of nearly £800,000 from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, is the second stage of an ambitious programme which applies the latest digital techniques to arts and humanities research.

Local authorities must embrace digital technologies and put them at the heart of what they do in order to improve services to citizens and save billions of pounds in the process, according to a report by “innovation foundation” Nesta. The Connected Councils: A digital vision of local government in 2025 report recognises many local authority are on this path, but much more needs to be done, specifically around digitising the back-office. “Local government has made huge progress in enabling residents to carry out basic transactions online. But most councils have a long way to go to deliver smooth, frictionless services and fully digitise their back offices,” the report says.

This is the third part out of a four part series reporting on the International Open Data Day Stockholm 2016. Read part I here and II here. After the presentations at Open Data Day Stockholm 2016 we took a short break to have the first and essential break for “fika” having coffee, tea, cookies and cinnamon buns. With participants warmed up and inspired by projects there was a lot of chatting in the space. Following this we moved on towards workshop and demonstrations, e.g. having participants ideate and brainstorm on why open data for cultural heritage should be maintained and released.
