The Open Data Platform Initiative (ODPi), a nonprofit consortium of big data industry leaders focused on the simplification and standardization of the big data ecosystem, announced today the release of its ODPi runtime specification and test suite to ensure applications will work across multiple Apache Hadoop distributions. Descending from Apache Hadoop 2.7, the runtime specification includes HDFS, YARN, and MapReduce components and is part of the common reference platform ODPi Core. The ODPi test framework and self-certification align closely with the Apache Software Foundation by leveraging Apache Bigtop for comprehensive packaging, testing, and configuration. More than half of the code in the latest Bigtop release originated in ODPi.

Today the ODPi issued the first set of documents that describes a standard distribution of basic runtime components for Hadoop, including YARN, HDFS, and MapReduce. Going forward, the organization is preparing a management specification for Hadoop as it considers which Hadoop problem area it will tackle next. The ODPi was founded a year ago  on the eve of the Spring Strata + Hadoop World conference as the Open Data Platform initiative to help reign in some of the complexity that’s impacting Hadoop distributors, software vendors, and users. The problems stem primarily from the rapid proliferation of Hadoop ecosystem components and the ongoing development of existing ones.

If you gotta go, the City of Ottawa is suddenly flush with new apps to point you in the right direction. So flush, in fact, that it looks like the city won’t bother developing its own public washroom-locater app after all. Three third-party app developers have gone ahead and used the city’s open data to make their own applications. And there may be more in the works. Local City Hall watchdog Kevin O’Donnell created the aptly named “ottpee” website, which shows the addresses and hours of the public bathroom facilities – right down to whether the washroom in question is for seasonal use only. Then there’s Bathroom Scout, which includes 600,000 restroom locations worldwide and Toilet Finder, which gives the addresses to 150,000 locations, including private company loos.
