In a bid to bolster its efforts towards Internet of Things (IoT), Samsung has introduced the ARTIK Cloud service, an open data exchange platform designed to connect devices and applications. This is its latest addition to a family of ARTIK software and hardware products designed for the Internet of Things. ARTIK Cloud provides easy-to-use, open APIs and tools to securely collect, store, and act on any data from any connected device or cloud service. Using these APIs and tools, companies can quickly bring new IoT solutions and services to market. The idea is to offer companies a service that can be rolled out quickly in order to bring Internet of Things applications to market. Presented this week, Macau’s first ever MSAR five-year plan aims at building a “smart city.” But what does that exactly mean? Experts from Hong Kong, Shanghai, Barcelona and London debated the concept yesterday during a seminar organized by the Science and Technology Development Fund. On the sidelines of the event which took place at the Macau Science Center, the president of the fund, Frederico Ma, said that the region’s development should feature “smart tourism, smart traffic, smart government and smart medicine.” According to some of the experts, developing a “smart city” could involve big data analysis – i.e. data sets that are analyzed computationally to assess patterns and trends, especially those relating to human behavior and communication – by government departments.

Want to know how many break-ins there were recently in your neighbourhood? How many cars were stolen or broken into in the area, or how many traffic accidents occur at a particular intersection? Starting this week, citizens will be able to peruse some of that information after the Montreal police force, in collaboration with the city of Montreal, began its first foray into the world of distributing open data on crime statistics. Statistics released Wednesday on break and enters show the neighbourhoods around the Université de Montréal and McGill University are among the most frequently hit, according to data crunching carried out by La Presse.

Saint John is playing host this week to the Canadian Open Data Summit at the Delta. David Eaves from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government telling his story with open data working with the City of Vancouver on creating legislation for an open data portal. He says people often want to change everything but he contends changing one thing has a huge impact because it shows people what is possible. He remembers on the day it launched a slew people who called asking how they did it and it became an example of how to do it. Both Premier Gallant and Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long were on hand for a breakfast event singing the praises of open data and it’s importance for government.

Samsung Electronics announced the commercial availability of Artik Cloud, an open data exchange platform designed to provide connectivity to IoT devices and applications. Unveiled at the Samsung Developer Conference, the cloud service is underpinned by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and marks the company’s first entry into the cloud services market. It provides the backend capability to complement its current IoT product range of Artik microcontrollers and SmartThings devices, and brings the company closer to its goal of becoming an end-to-end IoT solutions provider, Samsung said. While AWS already possesses an IoT platform, Samsung claims its service allows developers to more quickly connect IoT devices together with its open APIs and hardware-agnostic capabilities.

ANCHORAGE – The Municipality of Anchorage has adopted an open data policy to promote transparency through increased community access to government data and information.  The MOA Open Data Initiative will focus on collecting data from five initial areas: public health, housing, finance, public safety, and transportation. “Making Anchorage an open data city will give Anchorage cutting edge transparency and improve engagement and access to the Municipality,” said Mayor Berkowitz. The Municipality is partnering with Socrata to expand its open data capabilities. Within the five initial areas, early focus will be on providing data from food safety and sanitation inspections, property information, building permits and inspections, code violations, the budget, crime reports, and collision data.
