The latest addition to Toronto’s growing craft beer scene has officially arrived: Halo, a new Junction Triangle brewery, has opened the doors and taps just in time for the long weekend. The initial lineup of four unique brews includes a strawberry-kiwi gose, a low-alcohol IPA, a dry-hopped pale ale and a tart wit made with strawberry and rosehips. All of the beer is available to try on site in five- and 12-ounce pours. If that isn’t enough, bottles and growlers are also for sale to take home. Co-owner Eric Portelance says Halo’s calling card will be rare styles of beer made with non-traditional ingredients. “Style guidelines often limit creativity,” he says. “We want to keep experimenting and pushing boundaries while still making really drinkable beer.

As technology becomes more pervasive in daily life, ordinary citizens are looking to government to use the same tools to meet the growing demand for increased transparency. When it comes to using technology to drive open (or transparent) government, citizens have so far been less than impressed by what they’ve seen, according to the Pew Research Center’s study, “Americans’ Views on Open Government Data.” Just 7 percent of respondents said local governments share their data very effectively, and only 19 percent could think of an example where the local government did a good job providing information to the public about data it collects.

The California Department of Technology’s new innovation lab will be a place where government can try unconventional or radical ideas that encourage experimentation, its director Scott Gregory says. “That may scare some folks — ‘radical’ and ‘unconventional’ in government. Those two don’t often reside in the same sentence or conversation. But we aim to do that,” Gregory said during a May 12 technology conference in Sacramento. The lab being launched within the Office of Digital Innovation and Technology Engagement is a space where users can experiment with open source code via Redhat OpenStack. It will will be housed in the state’s private cloud.

The city of Los Angeles is its open databases and computers to California’s research and education network, giving the education community access to city data 1,000 times faster than before. The city is joining the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California, which will allow Los Angeles to plug into the CENIC-managed California Research and Education Network (CalREN), officials said. Joining CalREN will provide high-speed delivery of the city’s data to the state’s K-20 students, educators, researchers and 10,000-member institutions, including Los Angeles-area colleges and universities. In turn, all the city’s open data can be used and accessed by researchers from the educational community faster.

On a recent morning at Los Angeles City Hall, professor Jocelyn Graf and a team of students from Los Angeles City College met with officials from the controller’s office and the IT agency. On the agenda: How the students can help local government make sense of a mountain of internal records using “big data” tools. “Big data” is shorthand for analyzing massive sets of records to help make big decisions, like studying traffic patterns for urban planning, modeling stock market performance — or deciding what appears in our Facebook feeds. The widespread use of big data techniques is a fundamental change in business and public life, and it’s creating high-paying jobs. According to a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, data specialists can earn up to twice the median wage.

If you’re looking for controversy in the Apache Hadoop community, you need look no further than the 2015 launch of the Open Data Platform Initiative (ODPi), which some perceived as an attempt to wrest control of Apache Hadoop from its open source roots. In fact, some Apache Software Foundation (ASF) leaders see potential good coming out of the ODPi, although there are valid concerns about negatives too. Jim Jagielski, a founding member of the ASF and a member of its board of directors, shared his views on the ODPi during a candid Q&A session with the ODPi’s director of program management, John Mertic, at the recent Apache Big Data conference in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Open data is great because it’s open. But not all data is meant to be open. A lot of it is “sensitive.” What could be “open data” is often classified as “sensitive data” to protect the personal information and identity of individuals. Sensitive data may be restricted from publication, or it may be cleared for public release – it depends on the context. Everyone who publishes data wants to know which datasets are suitable for public release, and which ones are subject to various privacy considerations. Sometimes there are definitive answers to that question. The data may be protected under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), or other federal, state, and local laws and policies.

The BBC has announced that it is cutting its popular recipe service. Open data could be the key to retaining its value, says Andy Dickinson BBC Food recipes are a popular resource for foodies across the UK. CC BY 2.0, uploaded by hennasabel. The BBC has announced that it will mothball its database of over 11,000 recipes, as part of a plan to cut £15m from its website budget. The idea is to focus on distinctive content, which you can read in a number of ways including ‘to stop doing things that are commercially attractive’. As you may imagine, the announcement has not gone down well with users who see it as exactly the kind of distinct content the BBC do so well.

Our novel Hyperspectral Terrestrial (TLS) dataset has been published as open data. The laser scanning point cloud dataset consists of 30 individual scans collected as a time series covering a 26 hour time frame. Each point in the laser scanning contains colour information from several different wavelengths. Ordinary laser scanning data has colour information from one wavelength. Compared to traditional laser scanning data, hyperspectral data has advantages in for example target recognition and change detection, where it is possible to track changes of color of tree leaves, as in the data published. Also 3D RGB presentations can be produced from data without using separate camera. All laser scanners enable collecting data without external light source, also in the dark.
