Windsor film festival goers: Imagine the usefulness of an app that tells you exactly what screenings you are missing because you’re at a different movie. All right, it’s not useful. But it’s one example of the ways downtown Windsor’s Hackforge played with data for the upcoming 2016 edition of the Windsor International Film Festival (Nov. 1-6). Hackforge member Randy Topliffe came up with the “Fear of Missing Out” app, which he admits was not meant to be helpful. “It’s a different spin on things,” he said with a snicker. About seven people turned out for Hackforge’s Hack the Afternoon with WIFF event on Sunday — meant to be a creative exercise using the “open data” of the WIFF 2016 film schedule. “We’re interested in popularizing open data.

At the beginning of Open Access week, Alice discussed how articles published in the BES journals can be made more accessible and discoverable, and what Open Access (OA) options are available to authors of papers published in BES journals. The BES Journals are hybrid journals (publishing both subscription and OA content) but our data archiving policy means that the underlying data supporting the results in the papers is always publicly accessible. One reason that we mandate the archiving of data is to encourage data reuse, and as this links with the theme for Open Access week of ‘Open in action’ I thought I’d take a look at the trends in data archiving across the BES journals.

The province’s municipalities will work with the provincial government to be more transparent with councillors’ and staff expenses. The announcement comes after a forensic audit of Richmond’s councillors and CAO expenses revealed that taxpayers were paying for air travel upgrades, alcohol and adult night club expenses, as well as meal per diems and credit card charges for the same period. Zach Churchill, minister of the Department of Municipal Affairs, said earlier this week that his department is looking at amending the Municipal Government Act to ensure all municipalities are following the highest standards of accountability and transparency.

New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Michael Harrison presented his 2017 budget proposal to City Council members Friday. This year, the New Orleans Police Department received the highest public approval rating it has gotten since 2009, and Harrison said he wants to keep that momentum going into next year. To maintain the positive public approval rating for 2017, one of Harrison’s goals is to increase funding for more recruiting and hire more civilian personnel for the department, so officers can focus on their policing duties. “This will enhance our abilities for crime analysis and crime scene processing without placing additional burdens on our commissioned police officers.
