Brett Hurt is the CEO and Co-founder of data.world, which is building the most meaningful, collaborative, and abundant data resource in the world. He is also a seed-stage investor at Hurt Family Investments (HFI) in partnership with his wife, Debra. HFI are involved in 45 startups and 11 VC funds. HFI has directly made 34 startup investments, and Brett has also joined the Advisory Board of 11 additional companies. (Full disclosure: HFI has a minority investment in Gigaom). Prior to HFI, Brett founded Bazaarvoice (NASDAQ: BV) and served as CEO and President for seven and a half years, leading the company from bootstrapped concept to almost 2,000 clients worldwide and through its successful IPO.

A self-proclaimed “numbers guy,” Ballmer said the truth is getting lost in the political rhetoric, and he wants to arm citizens with data to defend against lies by the campaigns. “Nobody seems to care about the facts,” he said. When not jumping around on the sidelines of Los Angeles Clippers games, the former Microsoft Corp. chief executive officer has been spending his retirement on the inside of an Excel spreadsheet. Ballmer and a team of about 25 data geeks have been poring over more than three decades of government documents to create a comprehensive accounting of U.S. spending.

Nova Scotia’s open data portal has been updated with significant historical, cultural and other data sets, including The Book of Negroes for the first time. More than 25 new and refreshed data collections were added yesterday. The portal has 286,000 page views since it was launched last February. The Book of Negroes data collection is available in an open format. It relates to the immigration of 3,000 African American refugees to Nova Scotia following the War of Independence in 1783. As well, businesses can view provincial tourism visitation and accommodation statistics going back to 2007. “Nova Scotia joined the open data movement and we continue to make more information available for everyone to use and share,” said Internal Services Minister Labi Kousoulis.

The Massachusetts chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has been invested in one of this year’s state ballot questions: Should Massachusetts legalize, regulate, and tax recreational marijuana? The ACLU has come out in favor of Question 4, and has produced a number of things to help back up its support, including a live map that shows the racial disparities that still exist in Boston law enforcement’s policing of cannabis. Data from the Boston Police Department shows that an average of 13 people per week face police harassment or arrest because of marijuana. The ACLU’s live map is updated daily using data from the Boston Police Department and the latest census information.

ICANN has begun a pilot project to introduce an Open Data Initiative for ICANN-generated data.  Various ICANN activities produce data related to ICANN’s mission of coordinating the Internet’s system of unique identifiers, including domain name system operations, domain name registration activities, performance monitoring and many other topics.  The aim of this project is to bring selected data sets into the open, available through web pages and programming APIs, for the purposes of external party review and analysis. Earlier in October, ICANN staff held an internal kickoff meeting that concentrated on developing the catalog of data sets and a means to prioritize their availability.

Digital society: Who owns the data, anyway? A digital society is emerging, in which virtual and physical elements blend into a new reality. We have to get it right. I mean, if a digital business messes up, there are often alternatives of where you can take your business. But in the digital society? We cannot live outside of it. We are part of it whether we want it or not. We need to find a way to navigate the digital society with skill and in comfort (a concept I call “digital dasein”, in reference to the work of Heidegger). So we have to figure out the rules here. See “Introducing Digital Connectivism: A New Philosophy for the Digital Society” for some more detail. One important aspect, that we recently discussed in our research community is “data ownership”.

Traditionalists say that an online map showing the best spots for wild mushrooms goes against the secretive nature of the activity Getty Images The secretive world of wild mushrooms is in uproar after the publication of an online map disclosing the best spots for finding fungi. Traditionalists say that the initiative, spearheaded by an open-data activist, runs counter to the clandestine nature of the activity. They fear that hidden woodland sites known only to their own families could end up on the internet and be invaded by pickers from across the country. The Edward Snowden of fungi is a mushroom-loving computer expert from Besançon in eastern France who sees no reason why open data should not apply to his favourite autumnal hobby.
