Earlier this year, Grace Simrall took the top job in the city’s innovation office. She oversees the city’s open data portal and works to support entrepreneurial growth in Louisville. Simrall is picking up where her predecessor, Ted Smith, left off. She’s working to open an innovation lab in downtown Louisville and helping the city bring ultra high speed internet to residents. Simrall considers herself the “front door to public-private partnerships.” She’s a former entrepreneur, too. Simrall founded iGlass Analytics and was more recently the executive director of innovation for Intel Care Innovations. I spoke with her about the city’s open data initiative — its advantages, its future and the potential to make it a permanent fixture in Louisville.

City is among 55 involved in ‘What Works’ Bloomberg initiative Boulder will participate in a Bloomberg Philanthropies initiative “enhance their use of data and evidence to improve services, inform local decision-making and engage residents.” ( Mark Leffingwell / Daily Camera ) Boulder will take part in a national effort to help cities exchange best practices regarding the use of data to improve municipal government. The effort is called What Works Cities, and it’s initiative of ex-New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s group Bloomberg Philanthropies.

At the Thirteenth GEO Plenary Meeting, held in St Petersburg, Russian Federation from 9-10 November, 2016, representatives from GEO’s 103 Member governments and 106 Participating Organizations (POs) convened to launch a new look for the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) Portal. Participants also addressed how best to advance GEO Initiatives linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and for the first time, to engage with the commercial sector through a Plenary panel session. “Open data not only maximizes tax payers’ money in government infrastructure, it promotes economic growth, education and capacity building.” said GEO Secretariat Director, Barbara Ryan.

With today’s release of Open Data we have finalized the new site builder and are removing the beta label. All new sites you create will use the new builder experience, which is designed to give you great control over your site’s look and feel without requiring developer resources. You can explore sites that already use these new capabilities, like Oakland County Michigan and Waterloo Ontario Canada, or read more about how the new site editor works. If you have an older site, you can still edit the content on the site until June 2017. In talking with many of our amazing customers, they agreed that 7 months to upgrade their existing sites was plenty of time even though most are able to build a professional looking site in just a few hours.

Print media may be withering on the vine, but don’t write off libraries just yet. In fact, the director of the National Library of Medicine sees a bright future for medical libraries — as long as they evolve. “What the library was, which was a stable repository of knowledge, is no longer possible,” NLM Director Patricia Flatley Brennan said Tuesday in a keynote address to the American Medical Informatics Association Annual Symposium in Chicago. “Now the big action is moving upstream to the data.” Brennan officially took the reins of the National Institutes of Health-affiliated NLM just two months ago, and already the veteran nursing informatics specialist is putting her stamp on the federal agency. “The Brennan era will be one of data,” she said.

Knowing the likely course of cancer can influence treatment decisions. Now a new prediction model published today in Lancet Oncology offers a more accurate prognosis for a patient’s metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. The approach was as novel as the result – while researchers commonly work in small groups, intentionally isolating their data, the current study embraces the call in Joe Biden’s “Cancer Moonshot” to open their question and their data, collecting previously published clinical trial data and calling for worldwide collaboration to evaluate its predictive power. That is, researchers crowdsourced the question of prostate cancer prognosis, eventually involving over 550 international researchers and resulting in 50 computational models from 50 different teams.

The Henderson Police Department on Monday became the first Nevada law enforcement agency to join the White House-led Police Data Initiative, which seeks to use data to improve relationships between residents and police. As a part of the initiative, the police department will relay information on officer-involved shootings, use of force and diversity recruitment to federal officials. “What this means is that the community, media and academia will be able to get that information from the government at any given time to see how police agencies are doing,” Henderson police spokeswoman Michelle French said. The department is one of 129 law enforcement agencies nationwide to join the initiative, French said. The department also launched its open crime data portal last month.

Starting in 2014, authors of accepted manuscripts are eligible to earn up to three badges in recognition of open scientific practices. These include an Open Data badge, an Open Materials badge, and a Preregistered badge. A full list of the authors that have been awarded badges can be found on our Open Practices Acknowledgments page. To apply for one or more of these badges acknowledging open practices, authors must provide the information requested in the Open Practices Disclosure form, which is sent to all authors of accepted manuscripts. Unless the authors decide not to apply for badges, the form will be published with the article as supplemental online material.

CHAMPAIGN — At the fourth annual Big Data Summit, several speakers shared why they believe technology and open data can be used for everything from helping end world hunger to informing citizens about sewage in the Chicago River. “We stand at the beginning of this new era of technology-driven transformation,” said Adam Hecktman, Microsoft’s director of technology and civic innovation for Chicago. He told a crowd of 400-plus Thursday at the University of Illinois Research Park that he believes the civic-tech movement can use this technology and data to make a real difference.
