Last month, the Austrian State Secretary Muna Duzdar handed out the ‘Oscars of the Open Data Community’. The awards were part of the ‘open4data.at challenge 2016’ organised earlier this year. The annual challenge aims to bring open data and ideas together in innovative and creative solutions. The winners in the three categories were: The ‘open4data.at challenge’ is a good example of successful cooperation between ministries/authorities, academia, business and the community, the State Secretary said. Open data is essential to make Austria digitally fit. I see a large economic benefit, since the information and data are available to everyone. Know-how is utilised and the value increased.

It’s clear that measuring progress against the Sustainable Development Goals will require a huge amount of data and that collecting these data will require a significant amount of effort. But should this be the top priority in the data revolution? In countries where statistical capacity and resources are scant, trade-offs between the need to report internationally on SDG progress and to develop information systems that meet domestic needs will inevitably take place. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that whole new reporting systems are needed for SDG reporting at international, national and even subnational levels. At the international level, the task of producing a set of coherent SDG indicators to measure progress continues.

Open Data forms one type of available building blocks which can be used to accelerate the digitisation. As these building blocks are already created, disclosing them creates various societal benefits with limited costs. However, how the owners of these ‘building blocks’ disclose them, can differ per country. To get a grasp of the different possibilities, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation therefore published a report on Open data from the international perspective. In this report they explore the Open Data and digitisation developments of ten countries, among others France, Indonesia and the United States of America. With this exploration the report offers a frame of reference, presents models and suggests alternative strategies which can be used when thinking about Open Data.

Sarah Schacht, a principal consultant at Smarter Civic, has been appointed as operations manager at the Identity Ecosystem Steering Group. The private sector-led organization said Thursday Schacht will help grow IDESG’s Identity Ecosystem Framework registry and foster collaborations with companies, government agencies and civil organizations in the areas of privacy, security and identity management. “We are excited to have Sarah onboard and look forward to leveraging her social media, community engagement, open data and government expertise to advance the IDESG,” said Sal D’Agostino, IDESG president. Schacht has worked with government, philanthropy and technology organizations and led an open government technology nonprofit.

Since the federal Freedom of Information Act was enacted in 1966, transparency has become even more of a hot-button issue across the public sector. All 50 states and many local governments now have their own FOIA laws as well. But while these mandates for transparency enjoy broad support, agencies at all levels of government have limped along in their attempts to abide by them. At first, governments utilized slow, expensive and inefficient paper-based processes to accommodate citizen and media requests. Everything changed with the advent of the information superhighway. By the mid 1990s, new amendments were written into FOIA that required governments to make certain types of records available electronically and, shortly after, transparency initiatives began migrating online.

In recent years, we’ve made tremendous progress against global health challenges once thought to be insurmountable. With stronger coordination, targeted investments and increased access to life-saving tools, child mortality has been halved in the past 25 years and millions of lives have been saved from infectious diseases. In short, children are living longer, healthier lives, and once struggling economies are thriving. In May, a global group of public health experts convened by Chatham House took a bold step forward that stands to change that, issuing a call for all public health surveillance data to be shared as necessary to improve and protect public health.
