“I am very keen on transparency, increasing citizen understanding of council finances, and driving more effective competition among suppliers and contractors, to bring down council’s costs.” said Mr Hay. “There are three priority areas targeted by this policy: first is an Open Data portal for council’s Research Monitoring and Investigations Unit, second is an interactive council budget portal, similar to the one used by the City of Boston, and third a searchable tenders and contracts database. “In 2014, while working in the Social Policy unit at Auckland Council, I commissioned an open data site for grants made by pokie trusts, so people could see which groups in Auckland had received money form pokie trusts, and how that grant money was distributed to different areas in Auckland.

The government is preparing for a major overhaul of its open data portal, Data.gov.au. The current Data.gov.au site is based on the open source CKAN data portal software. The site launched in 2013. The Data Infrastructure and Government Engagement (DIGE) team within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s (DPMC) Public Data Branch has partnered with the CSIRO’s Data61 for the overhaul. The Public Data Branch is a product of a 2015 fusion of the Department of Finance’s open data team, the Data Policy Branch and the Department of Communication’s Digital Government Strategy. Data61 is planning to release a first prototype of the new portal later this year. The initial prototype is expected to offer improved searching across multiple data repositories.

Four private sector techies have joined Wellington City Council and Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) as part of a new Open Data Fellowship – providing a fresh perspective on how to make open government data even more useful, says Land Information Minister Louise Upston. “The Fellowships mark the beginning of a new way of working between government and private enterprise that’ll see more innovation using government data to solve local issues,” says Ms Upston. The fellows, who have a range of different skills including software and web design, will help give LINZ and the Council new insights into how their data can benefit New Zealand communities. “More than 50 people applied, all with great ideas about how they can help government be more responsive using digital technology.

Over a month ago, the city of Milwaukee established an Open Data policy. This is huge news for the city, but what does it mean for you? Cities like New York, Philadelphia and Chicago have not only established policies but have built apps and websites around Open Data. But what exactly is Open Data? According to Milwaukee’s policy, Open Data is described as: To put it simply, Open Data is all about government transparency, which helps to maintain a healthy relationship between government and the community. Various governments make all types of data available to the public. For example, there is data of all the parking tickets that were given in 2012.   Someone actually took that data and create a map of the hotspots high-ticketed areas in the city.

According to Popular Mechanics, when Raonic practices, he uses Zepp’s training tracking sensor, a 0.27-ounce device that connects to the bottom of his racket to track a number of metrics that include swing power, spin, impact location and stroke type.

The open data platform includes data from about one-third of the country’s urban transit agencies with fixed route service. Samantha Ehlinger is a technology reporter for FedScoop. Her work has appeared in the Houston Chronicle, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and several McCl… The Department of Transportation launched its first version of a National Transit Map with machine-readable data on stops, routes and schedules from 270 agencies. Nearly 400,000 stops and stations on nearly 10,000 routes were published in the geospatial database, according to a blog post by Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

The GROW Observatory (GROW) is a 5m euro, European-wide project aiming to involve tens of thousands of ‘citizen scientists’ to make a contribution to global environmental monitoring and to give family farmers, gardeners and growers knowledge on sustainable practices. Together they will measure soil moisture at high spatial resolution over large geographical areas, while sharing knowledge on growing in different regions. The aim will be to increase small-scale food production and preserve the soil quality for future generations, while improving forecasting of extreme climate events, such as heat waves and floods.

MP Louise Upston wants to strengthen policy for making information more freely available to the public. The Government is considering whether to adopt the International Open Data Charter in a bid to make parliamentary operations more transparent. Ms Upston says there is a wealth of untapped information. “We see that Government data is owned by the people of New Zealand. We want to make sure that people who want to access it can, that it’s readily available and that more people are using it.” The charter, launched in 2015 has already been adopted by 17 other countries.
