An online tool that helps arts organisations with funding bids is to be launched. The resource, called Culture Everywhere, brings together data sets including the UK Census and the Index of Multiple Deprivation as well as grant-giving data from Arts Council England in order to reveal current funding provision across the country and highlight where there may be gaps. It will also include published research and good practice guides to help organisations construct funding proposals, as well as encouraging users to upload their own data. The tool is the winner of the Heritage and Culture Open Data Challenge, which is led by Nesta and the Open Data Institute and was launched to create answers to social issues using open data.

NASA has launched an API portal as part of its ongoing attempts to encourage reuse of the significant data sets available from the U.S. space agency’s missions and other ongoing projects. The API portal complements other initiatives, including the recently launched NASA Data Portal, open source code libraries and GitHub account. “We originally set up data.nasa.gov as our open data library, but we found that it is not such a good place to catalog our APIs and manage those resources,” says API portal lead Jason Duley. “So Dan Hammer set up our API docs GitHub pages as a quick way to get them online, and then we built api.nasa.gov as the central hub for our APIs.

Two different communities — government and technology developers — came together over the Memorial Day weekend to find ways to solve Hawaii’s traffic congestion. Winning solutions from the High Technology Development Corp. and Energy Excelerator’s Reboot the Commute event included signs with real-time traffic data, a real-time program to find an open parking meter and incentivizing use for Honolulu’s future bike share program. Jonas Vibell, pipeline strategy & partnerships at Energy Excelerator, said there was a good turnout from both communities with about 100 people participating throughout the two-day event and more than 60 people watching the final event. “We had a great partnership and I’ve been impressed by how everything come out,” he said.

On May 18, 2015 the White House formally launched the Police Data Initiative (of which the Sunlight Foundation is a participant!) with a speech by President Obama in Camden, N.J. However, before the formal launch, many of the initial partnerships began to form at an April 8 convening at the White House. As part of that gathering, individuals participated in four topic-specific breakout sessions to identify challenges and solutions across areas critical to law enforcement data collection, analysis and release. The following summaries outline key challenges and solutions identified during group discussions. During this session, participants debated the life cycle of data, from collection to storage and retention to decisions about release.
