World Bank has approved Sh5.25 billion to support Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) to generate better and more accessible data. The Kenya Statistics Program-for-Results will support Kenya to fill data gaps, improve quality of key official statistical products and processes, enhance dissemination practices and make data more accessible. “High-quality data are critical to measure progress in growing the economy, reducing poverty and fostering shared prosperity. When statistics are up-to-date and regularly released publicly, the data will inform decision making in the public and private sector alike,” said World Bank Country Director for Kenya, Diarietou Gaye. She added, “Open data helps not only to measure progress, but also to push it forward.

Open Government and Transparency Digitalisation, Innovation and Deregulation through eGovernment, Transparency and Open Data Open government, open government data, base registries, and cloud computing are areas currently being investigated in the ongoing ReSPA eGovernment study “E- to Open Government”. This visit will feed into the present ongoing study and inform the eGovernment working group on real-life implementation in the areas being investigated for the study. It will also give the participants a practical example on a collaborative, whole-of-government approach, where sector-independent ICT services are organised and produced without requiring any significant sector-specific expertise (the example of VALTORY, the new Finnish government ICT centre).

At DataCats, we are focused on a simple problem — how do we make sure every single government has easy access to get up and running with Open Data? In other words, how do we make it as easy as possible for governments of all levels to start publishing open data? The answer, as you might tell by this blog, is CKAN. But CKAN uses a very non-traditional technology stack, especially by government standards. Python, PostgreSQL, Solr, and Unix, are not in the toolbox of most IT departments. This is true not only for local government in Europe and North America, but also for almost all government in the developing world. Our answer to this problem are two software projects which, like CKAN, are Free and Open Source Software.

President Barack Obama on Saturday debuted a redesigned online tool with college-specific information about student costs, loans and potential earning power, scaling back a planned ratings system that critics derided as too subjective and unworkable. The College Scorecard — at https://collegescorecard.ed.gov — provides a snapshot of what former students of each school might earn, how much debt they leave with, and what percentage can repay their loans. “Everyone should be able to find clear, reliable, open data on college affordability and value,” President Barack Obama said in his weekly radio address.

As these changes are occurring, and various sectors of society are coming to terms with this new reliance on previously unimaginable volumes of data, new challenges are emerging. Among them is the question of how all of this data is to be secured. The main problem is that many of the companies and other entities adopting Big Data strategies are doing so without developing the necessary security structure they’ll need to ensure the integrity of the data they collect and store. Fortunately, Bitcoin’s blockchain may end up serving as a model for the type of solution the world needs to address this growing security need.
