The Urban and Regional Information System’s Association has named Haldimand County amongst the most forward thinking areas of the province when it comes to GIS and open data strategies. At a meeting on May 4, URISA recognized Haldimand County with a silver medal in the 2016 Best Public Sector GIS. “It’s an award that recognizes GIS movers and shakers,” said Matthew Davis, senior GIS technologist with the Planning and Development Division of Haldimand County. “It looks at people who are pushing boundaries in the public sector and how they are using new technology. One of the sells we had in our submission is that we are very agile as a corporation. It allows us to innovate with new technology rapidly.

Laura Manley is an Open Data and Digital Entrepreneurship Consultant with the World Bank’s Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice. Laura specializes in utilizing data for economic growth, working with governments from low- and middle-income countries on their open data policies. She is a lead author for the Open Data for Business Tool, which is the first assessment methodology for private sector use of government data. Laura is also the Co-Founder for the Center for Open Data Enterprise in Washington DC, where she manages partnerships and programs. As an open data advocate, she co-leads the Open Data Roundtables series in partnership with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to develop national guidelines for federal data.

“We have concluded that the Council and the Elections Board did not timely adopt meeting minutes for meetings in 2015, and we have noted that the City will be adding staff to enable these public bodies to do that more quickly,” said attorneys Jonathan Hodgson, April Ishak and Rachel Shapiro Grasmick in the seven-page letter sent to the city’s Board of Supervisors of Elections chairman Lois Neuman and copied to City Attorney Debra Yerg Daniel. While the Open Meeting Compliance Board’s opinion did not come with any penalties or fines, it did list recommendations for how the government can fix its problems. ROCKVILLE – A state board reported the city government violated the Open Meeting Acts by not posting meeting minutes in a timely fashion.

London and Bristol have come out top of the rankings for the factors which make a smart city, according to research commissioned by ICT solutions company Huawei. It has published its first Smart Cities Index, drawing on work carried out by Navigant Consulting, showing the two cities lead the UK in using digital technology for improving services. The index ranks the pair as leaders while giving four other cities – Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester and Milton Keynes – ‘contender’ status. London came out with an overall score of 80.5, marginally in front of Bristol’s 80.2, while the other four had rankings in the low to mid 70s. Leeds also scored just above 70, followed closely by Peterborough, while Nottingham and Sheffield had considerably lower marks.

The Digital Directorate of the Scottish Government has published a draft service standard for any digital services to be made available through the mygov.scot platform. It is drawing on the experiences of the UK Government Digital Service (GDS) with its Digital by Default Service Standard, and the Australian Government’s Digital Transformation Office – with an indication that the Scottish approach could be a hybrid of the two. Scott McLear, the directorate’s communications and engagement manager, has outlined the work in a blogpost that says, while a version of the standard has been published, it is still working on a model regarded as best for the Scottish public sector. The standard will apply to any service running through the central portal for the country’s online public services.

In recent years, a suite of new tools has emerged to help us ease some of our most pressing societal problems, such as impact investing, shared value, social enterprise and social innovation. Gradually, all sectors have come to recognise the value of these models, albeit with some disagreement over the scale of value. One tool has only just begun to be considered for its potential contribution to positive social impact – “big data”. The easiest way to think about big data is for what it enables us to do with large volumes of information.

Hyderabad: Much like the Centre, the Telangana government too plans to put out data pertaining to various departments in the public domain. On the lines of data.gov.in — the website on which the central government shares information — a single portal has been envisaged for state-related data. The purpose of such a move is to make available to the public a huge cache of information that can be analysed or made use of. “Once such data is put up to be accessed by the public, there are endless possibilities on how it can be used for the benefit of society in general,” said Rakesh Reddy Dubbudu, founder of ‘Factly’ and co-convenor of National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI).

BENGALURU: Co-founder of DataMeet (Community of Data Science and Open Data enthusiasts) Thejesh GN conducted a workshop with a bunch of children and taught them to build sensors for the environment on Sunday afternoon in Bengaluru.”Weather change is just a feeling for most children but they will now be able to measure the temperature and humidity at any given time at their homes,” said Thejesh.The four-hour workshop was a part of the Open Data Camp Meet 2016 and was attended by students. “I have never done anything like this before and it was so interesting that I will definitely go home and re-build the sensor just the way it was taught,” said Vaishnavi Arun, a second year student of MCC.The children built sensors using LED, micro-controller and bread board.
