Well-designed and properly executed clinical trials are often used to gain the stamp of approval for new drugs, therapies, or guidelines, but the process of developing a new treatment protocol should not end with this initial study period. What happens when the product or procedure enters general circulation is just as important – if not more so – than the conclusions drawn by researchers. However, there are few industry standards that govern the collection, analysis, and use of this real world evidence (RWE) in further development of healthcare innovations.

Even worse, “It came out that that position was unopposed,” and it had been in a number of previous races. Elected offices are open to all, but access and information about them often isn’t. Cupples figured if there’s a site for restaurant information like Yelp, there ought to be just as easy a way to find out how to run for office wherever you live.

The government is preparing a presidential regulation ( Perpres ) on open data, allowing the public to enjoy greater access to data. The deputy chief of staff at the Executive Office of the President for analysis and oversight of strategic issues on social, cultural and ecological affairs, Yanuar Nugroho, said the Perpres would be signed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo this year. “We want the perpres on open data to be signed this year and to be fully running next year,” he said. The idea behind open data is to improve the quality and accessibility of government data with and end goal to increase the amount of evidence-based policy.

A devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal on April 25, 2015, killing more than 9,000 people, injuring thousands more, and leaving an additional 3 million homeless. Immediately after the earthquake, the government, local and international security forces, and international aid agencies all jumped in to try to help. However, there was a lack of coordination between these groups. The power of an open source project like OpenStreetMap during a crisis like Nepal’s earthquake is undeniable, and I had the opportunity to see it up close and personal. I worked with the Kathmandu Living Labs team, where I observed thousands of local and international volunteers collaborating to create data and tools. Responding agencies used the team’s work to plan and execute their operations.

Dewand Neely spent more than a decade working in Indiana’s information technology department before becoming CIO in October 2015. He continues the state’s long tradition of hiring IT leaders from within, creating an organization built on stability. Now as CIO, Neely plans to advance the state’s groundbreaking Big Data project — an initiative that aims to lower Indiana’s infant mortality rate — to other areas. With its IT house mostly in order, the Indiana state government has shown the power IT has to improve citizen life. Neely recently talked with StateTech magazine about his top IT priorities, the future of data analytics and the importance of relationships. Organic farming may have an old fashioned image as being anti-technology. Another perspective is that organic is just more critically aware of technology. This was brought home to me at an event I spoke at in Italy last week. A sequence of presenters explained how they’re using open data to work with “agrobiodiverse” producers in their projects. The terms abound these days — agroecological, agrobiodiverse — but all involve taking some of the principles, processes and practices of organic farming and using them in farming more generally. Many of these initiatives also work on certified organic farms too.

The government will formally implement a public-sector salary disclosure list — commonly known as a “sunshine list” — with legislation to be introduced in the fall, according to Public Engagement Minister Siobhan Coady. Siobhan Coady, minister responsible for open government, announced Tuesday the province will move towards publishing a formal, official list of the names, positions and pay for all public-sector workers earning more than $100,000. The names, job titles and compensation information of all public-sector workers who earn a base salary of more than $100,000 will be on the government list — including those people working at arm’s-length agencies such as Memorial University or the health authorities.

Vice President Joe Biden called on cancer researchers and health organizations to set aside individual goals in treatment and research to work together on fighting the second-leading cause of death in the U.S. Advances against the disease that kills more than half a million Americans every year will come faster if doctors, researchers and groups like the  American Society of Clinical Oncology pool their efforts, Biden said at the annual meeting of ASCO, the largest gathering of cancer doctors in the world. Breakthroughs in detection and treatment are among the goals of the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative that Biden announced in January after the death of his son Beau from brain cancer.

Babb noted that the city has already launched initiatives tied to improving technology and customer service, such as electronic building plan review, which is still in the works, and a page to track how people are using the city website. A Knight Foundation grant is helping the Anchorage Library set up a system to crowd-source ideas for classes and programs. Babb said he expects to have a “10,000-foot view” of those existing projects and help push them forward, and encourage the use of data to make decisions.
