Our city operates on multiple layers of data; it lives and breathes information. Until recently, much of that data was invisible and inaccessible to the public. This changed with the open data movement, which allows citizens free access to numerous datasets.Layered: Data Representations in Infrastructure and Design, a presentation at the Center for Architecture to be held on August 2, will address design and the big data revolution, and will explore what the impact may be to current and future infrastructures.

After a deficit in fundraising capital, the civic tech nonprofit Code for America (CfA) is struggling to hold onto its national network of volunteers. An article by Civicist Managing Editor Jessica McKenzie reports that CfA’s volunteer-led Brigade program — that has offered civic tech and open data tools locally since 2012 — may be in jeopardy due to a lack of donations that supported much of local chapters’ regional and national work.

Want to get women to come to your next hackathon? Let them know they are welcome, and give them tools to succeed, NASA has found. Tracey Birch, a woman with 25 years of experience in software development and system administration, had never seen so many women in tech in one room. Last week she was named as one of 49 NASA Datanauts — just five of whom are men — for the 2016 program, which aims to give more women with varying programming experience opportunities to use NASA data and code with it.

In 1962, when Washington Dulles International Airport opened in Loudoun, the county soon transformed from a rural community into a dynamic suburb with hitherto unparalleled economic development. To keep pace with the county’s growth, Loudoun purchased GIS software from Esri to modernize its mapping technology. With the Toronto Public Library’s push to provide more open data, now we have the opposite of the banned books story available at all times, as anyone can see what library patrons are searching for in real time. Using the Google Analytics API, the Toronto Public Library has created a real-time visualization of what its many patrons are looking for. In the time that the Torontoist voyeuristically checked out the searches, there were definitely fellow Torontonians who entered searches like “how to learn,” “lifetime imprisonment,” “how men have sex,” and “Batman V. Superman DVD”. (That last person is a particularly lost soul, and we should feel sorry for him or her.

Metro has released a new data feed allowing developers to map train locations in real time, fulfilling a promise the transit agency made in February after complaints were raised over the reliability of its information. Riders can use the information in third-party apps to determine when their next train will arrive or, perhaps, if congestion is holding up their line. “We heard loud and clear from our riders that being able to easily find accurate, real-time information was important to customers during their commute,” Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld said in a news release. “This is just one way that we can give customers the information they want while simultaneously leveraging the expertise of third-party developers.

A draft bill introduced in the House would require all congressional bills, resolutions and documents to be published in machine-readable format. The 2014 Digital Accountability and Transparency Act standardizes a governmentwide data structure to track federal spending, and the Searchable Legislation Act, introduced July 13 by Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), would similarly standardize an electronically searchable format for federal legislation and congressional records. If passed, the bill would effectively convert legislation in the House and Senate from the current document-driven structure to a data-driven one, allowing the public to automatically search and download congressional documents in bulk.

(TNS) — The New Jersey Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case brought by an open-government activist who contends that the public should be allowed to view electronic data and metadata kept by local government agencies. In summer 2013, John Paff requested a log of the emails sent by the Galloway Township police chief and the township clerk during a two-week period in June 2013, and then sued in an Ocean County court when his request was denied. A judge in 2014 ordered that the information be released to Paff, the chairman of the New Jersey Libertarian Party’s Open Government Advocacy Project. For the last two decades, Paff has filed numerous requests for public records in his quest to test transparency in local government.

The term “datafication” was coined to describe the consequences of the digital revolution: the growing generation, collection and storage of digital information concerning all aspects of the physical world (including earth activity, weather, climate, and biosphere), human lives and activities (including DNA, vital signs, consumption, and credit scores), and societal patterns (including communications, economic activity, and mobility). The datafication of the world is fueled by the automatic generation of data through the billions of digital devices that surround us: cellphones and tablets, e-devices, security cameras, credit cards, badges and satellites. However, little of the generated information is actually used to improve people’s lives or in the design of better public policies.

Tackling a county budget may seem daunting, but Smart Cville tactfully lays out Albemarle’s budget in a spread of colors with its new budget visualization tool that illustrates how your money helps the county. Smart Cville, a locally based nonprofit, aims to open up data, plain and simple. Creator Lucas Ames, 35, sent out a letter in mid-April requesting that Charlottesville adopt an open data resolution. In mid-June, the mayor convened a meeting to discuss open data as the city continues its work to further improve open-data relations between city legislatures and citizens. “One of the reasons we are most excited about this visualization launch is that it provides the community with a good example of how citizen innovators can use technology to help solve public problems,” says Ames.
