KITCHENER — The City of Kitchener launched a new online portal to make it easier to access almost 100 different data sets, from an inventory of trees to where the city issued parking tickets. The city began offering access to data sets in 2014 as part of efforts to create an open government, one that opens up city operations to its citizens and also allows greater input from residents, said Dan Murray, Kitchener’s director of technology. The portal, launched along with the release of another seven data sets, allows people to search for data using key words and provides a visual map for data that’s tied to a particular location.

At this year’s Highway Africa — the continent’s largest annual gathering of journalists — watchdog groups showcased a host of open data and accountability tools aimed squarely at Africa. Here are six of them, developed by Code4SA and presented by Wellington Radu of Media Monitoring Africa and Levi Kabwato of the Open Democracy Advice Centre. Media Monitoring Africa explains its approach to data as a form of advocacy where data capture and analysis forms the first step towards active and ongoing engagement. What it is: In the run up to the 2014 national and provincial elections in South Africa, MMA wanted to see how it could harness the potential of technology and data to provide journalists with useful tools to help them report stories more accurately and provide context and evidence.

The EurekAlert! website has been taken offline as AAAS works diligently to address a serious security breach. We are taking this step out of an abundance of caution. The integrity of content on our website is of the utmost concern to us. On September 11, a reporter-registrant contacted us to express concerns after he was approached via Twitter by an unknown individual who offered to share EurekAlert! login information. An investigation revealed that our website had experienced an aggressive attack on September 9 that compromised usernames and passwords. As we were working to implement a secure password-reset protocol for all registrants, the unknown hacker publicly released an embargoed EurekAlert! news release.

Wilmington’s tech scene is growing. With low rents, low cost of living and close proximity to larger metro regions, Wilmington offers more than enough strategic advantages to attract innovative startups that could bring talent, investment and well-paying jobs to our neighborhoods. Unfortunately, progress has stalled as more and more new businesses are putting down roots just outside the city limits, and some businesses that used to be located in Wilmington have left the city, according to a 2015 Wilmington News Journal report. In that same report, business leaders warned the city that they may leave town unless something is done to improve public safety and city services. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Street Bump, an app that uses a smartphone’s accelerometer to detect jolts and then looks up their location using the GPS When the municipal authority in charge of Boston, Massachusetts, was looking for a smarter way to find which roads it needed to repair, it hit on the idea of crowdsourcing the data. The authority released a mobile app called Street Bump in 2011 that employed an elegantly simple idea: use a smartphone’s accelerometer to detect jolts as cars go over potholes and look up the location using the Global Positioning System. But the approach ran into a pothole of its own. The system reported a disproportionate number of potholes in wealthier neighbourhoods.

Most of us are blissfully unaware of the data exchange’s that are happening between large companies in our society. For example; Retailers providing huge amounts of data to external loyalty schemes. We often don’t think that the convenient new services we’re being offered involve this sort of data exchange and matching between two or more organisations. Data Republic is a start-up founded in Australia that wants to make sure these exchanges occur with the highest possible security and privacy standards. Last month they launched a world first data marketplace. They explain it as a home for organisations to list, exchange and collaborate on data exchange projects in a secure environment. Two large Australian banks and an airline are investors in Data Republic.
