The District Department of Transportation (DDOT), which oversees local transportation issues for Washington, D.C., has released a new Web tool to help frustrated commuters understand where and when traffic congestion is at its worse. On Monday, Feb. 13, the DDOT released its District Mobility Project in order to create an open communication between the residents and transportation officials. The site tracks all types of surface mobility, including personal vehicles, city buses, bicyclists and more. Statistics are shown on congestion, reliability and accessibility in the district in a graphic way to better understand problematic areas, which helps narrow down where the most amount of help is needed.

Hello! We’re carrying out a review of Open Data Communities (ODC), DCLG’s Linked Data platform. ODC is currently mostly aimed at data power users (i.e. statisticians, analysts, and software developers). But we’re trying to find out how it’s used by different people so we can make some recommendations on how it can be improved and extended, to enable more people to take advantage of the data available.Since 2011, Open Data Communities has provided access to a range of official statistics for information and reuse, covering data which ranges from housing to the Index of Multiple Deprivation – a dataset that is used by hundreds of organisations to target funding and services.

The Federal Aviation Administration has registered 690,000 unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, since late 2015. But the skyrocketing increase in drones has created a new set of data management challenges that can only be met by modern IT capabilities, according to FAA officials. Drone operators are required to notify air traffic controllers when their devices are within five miles of an airport, and there are 19,000 airports in the United States. To moderate this massive data collection effort and facilitate communication, FAA uses Esri’s GIS tools for its “FAA Drone and Plane Safe Integration” map, according to Langston Majette, a senior support staff member at FAA’s Unmanned Aircraft System Integration Team.

Eduardo Ariño de la Rubia has been building quantitative teams for the past two decades, and knows first-hand how hard it can be to bring data science capabilities into a production setting. He understands there are multiple pitfalls waiting to trip up data scientists, from corrupted models and code deployment snafus to collaborating as a team and proving to the CFO that stuff actually works. So when an advertisement for Domino Data Lab popped up on his Twitter feed, asking him if he wanted to run his models faster, it grabbed Ariño de la Rubia’s attention. After trying out the cloud-based data science platform for a few minutes, the then-Principal Data Scientist for the Ingram Content Group realized what he was looking at.

For a second year, London has cracked a Top 20 list of Canadian municipalities committed to making data freely available. Public Sector Digest released its 2016 Open Cities Index Report Monday, ranking London 13th out of 68 municipalities. That’s eight places lower than 2015, but the drop can be attributed to more municipalities taking part in the countrywide ranking, said Tyler Sutton, editor-in-chief of the London-based digital publication. “It was less of a case of London sliding and more of a case of just some larger communities with more advanced open-data programs joining the index in Year 2,” Sutton said. Open data is the practice of making public data available and easy to use and share.

Last week, on Feb. 2, leaders from 22 tech companies fanned out across Capitol Hill. We crossed from Senate office buildings to House, and back again. We sat down with eight members of Congress and nine groups of staffers. We walked nearly ten miles. We ended our fourteen-hour day with a well-deserved beer. This was my sixth Groundhog Day leading the Data Coalition. It resembled the previous five. Our trade association wants the federal government to modernize its information. Open data must replace documents. Formats must replace forms. Companies and programs should be identified the same ways, across agencies. Separate systems should talk to each other. We started saying this in 2012. Our mission statement is supremely wonky. Our ambitions aren’t.
