Thanks to a partnership with Current, the GE startup that specializes in creating intelligent environments for commercial buildings and industrial facilities, the City of San Diego announced a $30m investment to deploy what it called the world’s largest smart city IoT sensor platform. The program will in part transform streetlights into what Current called a connected digital infrastructure that will allow San Diego to collect real-time sensor data that can be used to develop applications that benefit the community. “From directing drivers to open parking spaces to helping first responders during an emergency, the open data platform offers limitless opportunities to increase safety, optimize municipal systems and create real-time environmental awareness,” Current said in a press release.

Hackers took over New Westminster city council chamber as part of Innovation Week. Mayor Jonathan Cote was a member of the panel that listened to presentations from nine teams taking part in the weekend’s hackathon and judged apps developed by those teams. “Basically, these teams worked all weekend on using the city’s open data to develop an app that they thought was useful to the city, or maybe even potentially useful commercially,” he said. “It was really interesting to see what they came up with.

Austin’s data.world gets $19M to build ‘social network for data people’: Austin startup data.world came out of stealth mode last July to tell its story. The company, founded by a team of Austin tech veterans, revealed it was building a social network geared toward helping data scientists connect and share collections of data. At that point, data.world was already armed with $14 million in Series A funding. This past week, the company announced that it has raised an additional $19 million. The deal was led by family investment group of Chicago entrepreneur Pat Ryan, and includes capital from Chicago Ventures, Hunt Technology Ventures, LiveOak Venture Partners and Shasta Ventures, among others.

The partnership aims to solve the disconnect between online and offline shopping by helping the 88% of people who research online but purchase in-store. SME lender Prospa has received the largest VC investment to any Australian business. The fintech lender received $25 million in capital from AirTree Ventures and existing investors including Entrée Capital and Ironbridge Capital, while also reaching a $250 million milestone in loans funded.

This is a so-called bug-fix release, i.e. it contains only improvements for existing functionality, no new features. Release contains fixes from upstream for single-sign-on functionality (ODN/CAS was updated from version 4.1.0 to 4.1.10) and full-text search (ODN/SOLR was updated from version 4.10.2 to 4.10.4). The Department of Defense has launched Code.mil, an open source initiative linking software developers around the world with Federal employees. Created in tandem with GitHub, Code.mil allows software developers from the private sector and Federal employees to modify unclassified code written for DOD projects. Code.mil will serve as a repository for DOD code that individuals can review and suggest changes for. “This is a direct avenue for the department to tap into a worldwide community of developers to collectively speed up and strengthen the software development process,” states a press release on the DOD website. “In exchange, DOD program code hosted on GitHub will be open and available for individuals to reuse and repurpose for personal and public projects.
