`Don’t be too open minded lest your brains fall out’. The line (though said in a different context) captures the meaning of Open Data day celebrated on March 4th this week. There was a time when information of any kind was considered as a fiefdom. You would hold on to it, protect it from being leaked out to the enemy territory lest it be used against you. But with technology smashing all such barriers, the whole world of information is here. From global village, to global street to global room we are now reduced to a global pocket. But has it made knowledge an effortless endeavour. That is the question of curiosity for all Open Access proponents. Before we celebrate this openness, let’s take a pause. Being open doesn’t mean being free.
